Going down the intercoastal next year for the first time. Any good videos that I can watch to ease my stress? Thanks for your help, Richard

Duke, The ICW goes all the way to Brownville Tx

What part are you contemplating? Unless you are shallow draft, New Jersey is an outside passage. There has been more that enough said about the Chesapeake bay but it can be glassy flat or very boisterous. The canals through the Virginia swamps are draft sensitive, the sounds of North Carolina are well documented, after that it is mostly canals. I have some friends that have made the trip a few times and I wonder how you could put a 6 weeks trip onto a DVD that didn't either scare the hell out of you or make you complacent.

We used this one

We used this dvd on our trip in 2005. It takes you from Norfolk to Miami in 100 mile sections. We would view the video at night and it gave us an idea of what was ahead of us. Enjoyed the dvd but the sound track was tiresome after awhile

Seadaddler, Don't wait until November to start

south. The weather can close in on you and you can find yourself sailing in winter weather complete with snow.

October on the Chesapeake

From all the snow birds we've met or know October seems to be the best month to work your way south in the Chesapeake. By the time you hit the southern part of the bay you're into a different weather pattern and temps will be a bit warmer.

Type in "Intercoastal Waterway", etc. in the archives and you can spend hours reading very useful information; and be directed to numerous other internet sites about crusing the ICW. Mike is correct... leaving from NY by mid October is probably best. I'll be leaving from Norfolk this year the day after Thanksgiving. Not really a problem to leave from here that late, just have to watch the weather as you go South. The Fall/Winter climate in the East DOES seem to have warmed, especially during the past 10 years, so hopefully Ross, I won't be a "Snowbird". :)
