On docking my Hunter Legend 35.5 today I noticed a vibration coming from the masy or boom. It continued even after I adjusted the rigid boom vang and the back stay. It is quite loud and may be causing damage to the rigging.Has anyone had experience with this problem?

It's the wind setting up a resonant vibration of something in the rigging. I've had it happen from time to time, typically at higher wind speeds. Try changing the tension in your halyards.

I have vibrations too from time to time. It has happened while tied up to the dock and while on the hard durimg the winter with the cover on the boat.

I suspect that the B&R rigged hunters with some prebend designed into the rig might show the resonance at particular wind speeds. On our 28.5, It occurs at the dock with no sail up. I had tried loosening the main sheet or tightening the backstay adjuster to no avail; I found a solution by wrapping both Genoa halyards opposite turns around the Headfoil and taking some tension down to the rail. If you get the resonance with a roller furler and no backstay adjuster, perhaps taking some tension on both Genoa sheets would quiet things down; I'd guess it's the same principle.

Stu is right. It's just a matter of finding the right combinations of lines to tweek to remove the vibrations.

BTW all Hunters do not have B&R rigs, most do but some do not. The Legend series for example are not B&R rigs.

Re Vibrations in rigging on Legend 35.5

Thanks for this tip and for all the others I got. I tried adjusting the backstay and shrouds and it actually worked. The vibration, which was very heavy, has now stopped and all seems well. I tightened all the shrouds about 1/8 th of an inch and snugged up on the backstay.
The rig on my 35.5 is by Isomat and they have stopped production but I did find a source at Charlaston Spars. I am relieved that I do not need a new mast as the vibration was so bad it would have shattered the mast eventually.
This is the second time I have had a similar problem. About 15 years ago I had heavy vibration in the boom which led to a total boom failure. That was caused by the triangulation of the mast, boom and topping lift. Since fitting the new boom I also fitted a solid vang and have had no problem since.

If I could recommend to you to tune your rig at the upper end of the specs for the shrouds. Particularly the cap shrouds. They are the primary force for controlling headstay sag. The lowers will counter the bend put in the mast by the increase in cap shroud tension.

Agree that proper tensioning should solve this- but I wonder if also, those white spaghetti sleeves tubes (to protect the genny from chafe) that slide over the rigging might also "dampen" the resonance.

I had those spaghetti sleeves on my boat when I bought it. I was advised by the guy that did th survey to remove them as they retain water and can lead to rust or degrading of the stay. As to their dampening qualities,I neve noticed a difference, but I diremov thmsonafte tepurchse so perhaps they would help.
