I have a hunter 27 with a collapsing prop and lately I have been having a lot of vibration and a loud knocking coming from the rear of the boat, either in the ahead mode of astern mode. I am thinking that there is a problem with the prop. has anyone else had this problem?

You may have something wrapped around the propeller or shaft. Possibly rope or cable. You need to have a look as soon as possible or you could damage your propulsion train. I have seen this before. An easy fix if that is the problem.

Have you tried seeing who wants in? Could be a mermaid. Just sayin'.

Sorry. I couldn't help myself. Now back to our regular programming.

Or the shaft strut has come adrift and is complaining.
A quick look with a diving mast is in order. and don't forget to test the water for stray AC currents that can kill you if you are at a marina.

Good luck

We had a similar problem a couple of years back. It turned out to be barnacles encrusted on the entire prop shaft. The imbalance caused a severe knocking at about 2500 rpm.

I had the same problem and found a piece of rope around my prop from a lobster trap. Use your selfie stick for your go pro and check it out.

I have similar problem but my vibration come when I use motor form 1300 rpm to idle, when I come to my dock
Not every time but it append often
My propeller is very clean, never mind for today test it that append even if I'm on the land
I just un winterized my boat and I start the motor and it append again with no propeller turn so it's not the shaft or propeller
I check my bracket ( fixe the motor to the boat) and it's ok
So maybe it the time to call specialist and spend $$$$$$ snif snif

I lost my mother in law, couple of years ago and she may be found my problem. I loved my mother in law...:snooty:

But now if you talk about the real problem, is not caused by my mother in law, and I need to found where I need to look before I call a mechanic....

Any advice .. I will be appreciated .. and sorry for my English, when I was young, I learn only speaking in french ....

Your English is very good. Thank you for joining this group.

Is the boat out of the water or in the water? If it is in the water, can you get it lifted out and put on a hard stand?

If it is a bent shaft, it can / will tear up your packing and this could lead to an ugly leak. Water could come in faster than you can pump it out.

Other things that cause vibrations, fouled prop with a piece of line or trash, like an old Plastic bag. Also a broken or cracked or nicked prop, too big a shaft zink, and there are other things. Also if the strut is excessively worn, stern bearing or shaft log is excessively worn. Not to mention worn shaft.

Good news, all these parts are available from Hunter. (Hunter owners parts). Stern bearing, shaft, shaft log, strut and bronze prop. But you need to get the boat on a hard stand and inspect it. Or, hire an experienced marine surveyor to look at it with you. You can hire them by the hour to look with you.

Yes the boat are out of water, until Saturday!
The propeller is clean and shaft seem to be ok
My real problem is even if I'm in or out the motor vibe when I turn to idle even if I don't use the transmission
I use only fuel level to get around 1300 rpm and when I turn to idle to stop the motor it get vibration
It is as if the motor had the flu or colds when it come back to idle and not every time so it's hard to catch the problem
If anybody had this problem I'm the one to learn more !

Thanks
ANDRE

Andre,
Your idle speed maybe set too low.
What is your idle speed? What does the manufacturer of your engine say the idle speed should be? Please check and set your engine idle speed.

My idle was at 750 and the book said 850, so I adjust it and seems not vibrate now
I hope that was only my problem
Thanks you very much to all reply
