Located some Dexron II on the web and should have by the weekend. Will see what that does. have my doubts, but one never knows. The slipping before, not now, theory seems plausible also.

The previous owner might have put 30 weight motor

oil or gear oil in there by mistake . I had a boat once that specified 30 weight non detergent oil in the transmission. Gear oil will have a sulfer smell to it. Transmission fluid is made from a very light viscosity oil. If the vibration and noise is slightly more than before it could be the normal sound without the dampening effect of the heavier oil.

Thanks, but know the yard mechanic that served the previous owner and he specialized in this powerplants, so that is not likely. What I took out was also thinner than motor oil.

Well the weather and a trip out of town killed my best intentions on getting back to you all on this. Took the boat out yesterday, first true run using the Dexron II. All smooth again and I think honestly smoother than it ever was. Maybe it was the use if the DII, maybe as a German friend suggested, I got some bubbles in the new fluid installing, but whatever it was I have a great ending and am very appreciative of all of you than weighed in. Now I am going to replace the fresh water pressure pump I burned out this afternoon! And that I know how to do.
