I have a Midland 78-211 hand held VHF radio that I bought from West Marine. I have missplaced (lost ?) the instruction booklet. How do I adjust the squelich (spell?) setting on this unit ?? Anybody have an extra instruction booklet ? RD

"Squelch" that background noise

Most handheld radios utilize the "squelch" control in order to filter out unwanted background noise. I am not familiar with your particular model, but this is how most of them generally operate. Turn your unit on, with the volume somewhere near the middle, and then turn the squelch control all the way up, until you are completely flooded with all that static and irritating, obnoxious background noise. Then slowly turn the squelch control down, until most of that noise is-"squelched," or suppressed. A good follow up action is to listen, and ensure that you can still hear all the other boats that are near you. If you can, then you have set it up properly. Best wishes, and smooth sailing from the SS Enterprise.

Info

Many thanks for the briefing on the squelch control. The unit does not have a squelch knob. It must be a an auto function of some sorts. Sorry you are not familar with this radio, it does a fine job so far - if I can figure out how to work the special features. RD

Midland = RadioShack??

Not exactly positive, but seems to me that Radio Shack has carried Midland radios through the years (along with Realistic and some others). Anyway, Radioshack's website (link below) can get you manuals for many of their products - I've downloaded one for a scanner and one for a phone answering machine (both purchased for a song at a garage sale). I didn't find the 78-211 mentioned above, Sorry. This is a handy link for other Radio Shack products. Good Luck.
