Is it standard for the microphone of a fixed VHF radio to act as a speaker when not transmitting? This is the way our VHF radio that we are replacing worked. With the main radio in the cabin and the mike stretched into the cockpit, it was easy to hear everything that was going on, whereas if the mike had not acted as speaker, it would have been hard to hear the radio from the cockpit. I can't find anything in the literature to confirm this while looking at models such as ICOM 304 or Uniden Solara. If it is a function found only in certain models, it is something I would need to know before purchasing.

Never heard of that before.

My Panasonic has its speaker in the main electronic box - never heard of a speaker in the microphone. Maybe it's a new idea????

Remote Mike

The remote mike also called ram mike in the cockpit acts as speaker or mike when not transmitting it is a speaker this the way they work other wise why have it in the cockpit. The ram mike or remote mike controls everything on the VHF just like the main VHF in the cabin. Nick

speaker in the mic

I have a Uniden 625 C and it has speakers in the mic and the radio itself as you describe. I also have a RAM mic that is wireless and can use the radio while anywhere on the boat with that. Having 2 speakers does give you better hearing. This set up is not standard only higher end units will have it.

My Uniden handheld has the option of a remote mike (corded) which I purchased so that only it sits in the cockpit, with the handheld protected inside the bulkhead. The mike acts as a speaker when not transmitting on it as well. I have sometimes thought of wearing it on my belt with the mike clipped to my lapel (policeman style) so that I could communicate from anywhere on the boat, but have never done it. It might be cumbesome.

Thanks all for your replys

Well darn, looks like I might need to spend more money in order to be able to hear the VHF while in the cockpit. I did a little more research on the VHF that has quit transmitting for me and it seems it was an exception with the mike that was both a speaker and a transmitter. It is a Standard Communications VHF model GX2330S. It would seem that Standard Communications VHF division has morphed into Standard Horizon. But the only place I can find anything on the model number GX2330S is in listings of boats for sale. A couple of them advertised the dual mike capability. So I guess I will either have to pay for a base station plus remote mike or find a model that explicitly advertises having a mike with the duality of transmit and speaker.

ICOM Remote Mic is very nice

The ICOM Remote Mic has been a great addition to Sea Dragon and a very simple installation, plug & play. Scroll to the bottom of the following page to see the installation of the ICOM remote mic. http://www.sailingseadragon.com/Instruments.htm Good luck in your search Garner

You can also

just mount a remote speaker on the ceiling of the cabin near the companionway, so you can hear it from both the cabin and cockpit. Most fixed-mount VHFs have a jack for a remote speaker, and you can buy a speaker for about $15-30.

VHF

I have a RAM mike that also has a speaker built in. I like it but the battery is only good for about 8 hours. The remote mike cost about $100. For just a little more you could buy a hand held VHF. That's the way I'd go if I had to do it over.
