So, is there an online course for the VHF license that is valid in Canada? I know there are colleges here in Ontario that offer it, but I really don't have time right now, but would like to get that out of the way

Is this a requirement in Canada?

Back in the day when a VHF (ship's station) license was required in the U.S. all one did was to send in the fee ($30?) and the license and number would arrive in due course. It was, as I recall, good for life and couldn't be transferred to another boat. Are the Canadians requiring this license? If so are visitors to Canadian waters required to get one or face a fine? Over and out Mike

VHF Requirements in Canada

VHF Radio Station licences are no longer required in Canada. However a restricted marine radio operator's licence is still required for using the radio. Not sure how that affects visiting boaters from the US.

I took the course in Vancouver

I took the course from QuickNav Boating School in Granville Island, Vancouver, BC. The course was one day and it was intensive. It was recommended to read the manual that was handed out before taking the course - I would highly recommend this as well. The course was something like $95 tax included, but remember this price includes the book and the money for the license, so the course fee is actually much less. The course started Saturday morning and was over about 1700 hrs on the same Saturday. After the test, temporary operator's licenses were handed out. I'm the kind of guy who teaches himself many subjects on my own, reading what I learn. And I did the same for this course, but I still recommend the course. Guaranteed test question: "What frequency is channel 16? What channel is monitored for DSC? These are the easy questions, there are hard ones as well.

A valid licence is required if -

you are a Canadian vessel entering US waters. You also require a maritime mobile radio station licence if you are an American vessel entering Canadian waters. There was to be a treaty between the two countries which eliminated the licence requirement for both, but 9/11 changed that and the treaty is now on the back burner.

Try the CPS

Hi Dwayne. Give the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron a call. If you already a member it's quite easy. The Barrie Squadron will run VHF operator card courses once they get enough requests( a couple or few times a year). The course and exam are fairly straight forward. Here's a link to the Barrie Squadron: http://www.barriecps.org/ I think there is a squadron in Newmarket as well. Eric
