VHF Interference

Hugh V.

I have a 83 Cat 30 with a mast mounted VHF antenna. The Coaxial cable for the antenna goes through the engine compartment (Universal M25 Diesel) Reception is great when we are sailing but when the engine is running the reception goes to almost nil. Does anyone know what could cause this and possible fixes? Greatly appreciate any help...

whine

Hugh, Are you getting a noise that increases and decreases with the RPM of the engine? If the answer is yes, you can get a filter (10amp is fine) at Radio Shack for line interference. Try that and if it still is there you'll have to install one on the alt output, shack also should carries that. Or a cheaper way to go instead of the alt filter is run a shielded line for your power in (12v #14 or 12)from your batt's to the radio.. one other thing I just remembered is to made sure you have good case grounds at your engine, alt and you could try a ground to the case of your radio. Well that gives you a few choices to try, do the easiest first and go from there.. If I can do any more damage feel free to email:)mosilver@netnitco.net mike WD9EOU

Mike, Got it. I will check the grounds and give the filters a try. I don't have an engine whine (but my car radio does) What we have is when the engine is running the VHF reception is really bad. Like somebody turned down the volume, but turning up the volume just gets us more static. Hugh

connectors

Hugh, One more easy thing, check the connectors on the coax.. if they are the crimped ones and have corrosion (u know that green/white stuff) you might want to go to the shack again and get the soldered connectors, they r not hard to do and could make a big difference. Because you don't have the whine I'd do the coax and grounds first and filters last.. Mike
