I'M looking for low cost gps and a radio. So far the Garmin e-trex Legend GPS and the Uniden Solara have caught my attention. Can I plug the GPS to the VHF ?. Any comment's? thank's ERIC.
you used the wrong preface; low cost. Sure, it's possible at a low cost but not at the lowest cost. You must be looking for a VHF that sends out your location as if it were a EPERB. Again, same as above.
The VHF radios allmost unamiuosly indicate that if a GPS was attached to it, your longitude latitude would be broadcast during distress. Is this ability to link up a industry standard?. The GPS comes with a PC computer link, would this cable be used to link the VHF to the GPS? thank's ERIC.
The interface and message format is standard. Be sure to set up the GPS in its configuration menu to transmit NMEA format instead of one of the proprietary or other formats.I have used the Legend for a few years and am quite pleased with it. The only drawback is the screen size for those of us who are learning what reading glasses are all about. I have used it primarily as input to my PC navigation program, but also carry it when driving in a new city or cross country (even shows the rest stops on the interstate).Seems that KMart or WalMart had a good price on the Legend recently.
