Most VHF does not have a GPS built-in.

Normally, in order for your VHF w/DSC to send out your Lat-Lon, you will need a separate GPS and connect the GPS to the VHF. However, with the plain GPS antenna's prices getting lower all the time, and showing up in cell phones, I would not be surprised to find a VHF with a built-in GPS. What does the VHF’s documentation say?

You have to connect your GPS to the NMEA input jack which is an RCA jack hanging on a pigtail. The radio does not have a built in GPS. Bill

Operational ?

Last fall I learned that the Coast Guard had only one area that this worked at which was the Atlantic City, NJ area. They will come on line but funding by the US government of course is slow as the Coast Gurard is underfunded. However, it is my understanding that the US Navy has this on their ships. There was an incident last year off California which the Navy picked up and then radioed the Coast Guard.

VHF/DSC

I have just got an Icom 402 and a Garmin 276c which I have linked via NMEA to the radio, autopilot etc. This is the only way to have gps position transmitted with DSC. When the radio & gps are on the radio shows the word gps on its screen. When the gps is not connected (its is handheld) gps doesnt show on screen.

Yes

You do have to connect the gps to the radio. It is easy though. Just take the NMEA data out and 0 V from the gps to the nmea in and 0 V on the radio. The radio then acts as a gps repeater giving continuous lat long on the display. Activating the distress comand will then send a message to every DSC set in range and will display your lat long position to all. PS I love the ship to ship MMSI calls. to set the receiving station to the chanel you have selected when sending the message is great
