VHF Cable - how long does it last?

Hi all,I once heard the VHF cable that runs up your mast should eventualy be replaced. Reason being - the strands over time break-down due to the flapping around in some mast (mine was not secured). Could anyone confirm this? My reception worked fine but I do have everything apart now and am wondering if I should replace that too.Thanks - Rob

what type coax?

It's possible but unlikely. Some poorer coax can degrade faster due to UV (even inside) and definitely from water instrusion through poor connectors. If it still works okay and you don't see any degredation of the braid near the conenctors, it's probably fine.

Suggestion on installation

When I re-rigged my boat about 12 years ago, I ran a 3/16" daron braid line down the inside of the mast and taped all the cables (and foam rubber to stop slapping) to it. That way, the weight of the cables aren't supported by themselves, but by the line.This was suggested by a marine electronics tech in my area (California's central valley), primarily because it can get up to 110 degrees here in the Summer, and the cables are designed to support weight, especially when enduring that heat.After 12 years, everything is still fine.

Still works

It still works fine. I was just concerned that the constant weight of the cable and the movement - I guess could degrade the strands. The outside looks fine.Thanks - I am just going to leave well enough alone on this one!Rob
