My (new to me) Catalina 320 1995 has an extremely loud Perkins engine. Any thoughts and experiences on alleviating this?

merry, In internet boating questions, smells, sounds, leaks, and electrical questions with photographs and no wiring diagrams are almost impossible to diagnose.

That said, there are many different kinds of noise. Things used to deal with it include motor mounts and lining the engine box with sound deadening material. It could also be an exhaust issue, perhaps a leak. Could be rattles, too, don't know.

Without any indication from you as to what you're comparing it to, or the kinds of sound, that's all I can offer.

The issue is 'what is the best way to sound insulate the engine box and surrounding area'?
There are many competing products in the market. Thanks.
Merry Chase.

OK, understood, that's a completely different question.

There really is no "best" material, because, like boats, the sound deadening materials are a compromise of quality, cost, weight, and the space you have available (thickness).

Don't know how far you've gone in your research. If you've just started, then a Google search of "boat engine sound insulation" should give you a good start, and also look on Defender's and West Marine's websites. The Google search will undoubtedly show previous posts on this subject that may well include posts made on this very forum, so you can also search here, too.

That's what I'd do.

One of my dockmates did just that, then waited for a sale, the stuff, all of it, is pricey.

Good luck.
