Slickcraft 26 Sailfish
I've recently bought a Hunter 356 with in mast furling for the main. It has vertical battens. Previously I've sailed a Ranger 29. While I'm pretty well versed in the trim of the Ranger main, I haven't even sailed the Hunter yet. Granted it isn't a racing boat but do you have any tips regarding getting the best performance out of the main. I hate going nowhere slowly.

Wish I Had Vertical Battens

But I do have roller furling. I had a lot of trouble with thr original main that got changed under warranty. Any way I did get a sailmaker to go sailing with me. I was amazed at how tight the out haul had to be even in light air. You are going to really enjoy that roller furling main. I find I hardly ever furl the jib. I find furling the main early gives great boat speed and keeps the boat flater than any thing I have ever sailed on.

How Was it

I am wondering what it was like going from full roach main to roller furling, was it like learning to sail all over again. I am thinking of going bigger we loved the 36 at the boat show. nick

sail plan musings

As I said, I haven't sail the Hunter yet. So, I don't know how it compares. You could argue that the Hunter has the full roach main in comparison to the Ranger, which is a 70's IOR influenced sail plan. That is a masthead rig with relatively small main and a large headsail. The backstay limits the roach of the main (Even though sailmakers tend to build in extra roach which gets stuck on the backstay annoyingly). One reason I bought the Hunter was the sailplan. I like the fractional fig, the smallish jib and the large main. I expect it to perform well over a larger range of wind conditions with sail changes or manhandling those large jibs. I just can't wait to sail it!
