I need to replace the main on my 1997 376. UK Sails is recommending vertical battens and an upgrade on fabric from the original. Does anyone know if the mast and mast slot will accomodate the battens? There would be five of them along the trailing leech/roach edge of the main each about 3-4 feet long. Thanks for any help!

Assume you mean Selden mast with inmast furling system. Yes, vertical battens fit, I think work great on our 44DS, much better sail shape than on our old 410 with furling main without battens. Go for it.

I just installed a 9.3 ounce Challenger high modulus Dacron sail with vertical battens from UK Sails on my 2004 386 Hunter. It fits in the Selden mast. UK sail maker should know. It significantly improves sail shape and increases sail area.

I agree. Go for it.

reply to batten question

My mast is a single extrusion from what was Z-Spar and now US spar. I think it will work, but it's a risk for the cost of the main at around $3400. Any more thoughts from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks for the two quick responses.

Re: reply to batten question

All sailmakers worth their salt will have a guideline on all mast made from the mast manufacture. This will enable them to make the sails to the right shape. I know when I had my mainsail made Sheldon had such manual for the sailmaker on technical aspects of making a sail with vertical battens. I would call US Spar to see what they have to say directly. What boils down too is the slot width big enough for the batten to pass through.
I was never a believer in vertical batten advantages over the years. My new Mack mainsail so rocks I cannot believe the performance improvements over my old sail. I just finished 125 trek to the Bahamas in 6kts of wind and I was doing 4kts. My old sail I can guarantee that I would have been motorsailing.
