Vertical Batten Sails

Putting aside the debate of the merits of inmast furling, I would appeciate assistance from owners who have vertical batten sail with their inmast furling systems. I've searched the archives and found plenty of comments. However, I wanted to tie together the manufacturer, the size of the roach and ease of use. I have found several manufacturers, including MaxRoach, Doyle, and Head, who offer vertical batten sails. Three areas of assistance - first, some appear to add substantial roach while others are more minimal. Jack's Place, a contributor to this site, has pictures showing a huge roach added by his vertical batten sail (but I don't know who manufactured his sail). One obvious point, I would think, is to add as much roach as possible. The second area of assistance is the width of the 'slot' in the mast to accomodate the vertical battens. My slot barely measures 1/2" and I've been told some manufacturers require more than. Finally, with the added battens, the area within the mast may not able to handle the vertical battens; some lofts offer a sail with partial vertical battens that don't overlap and hence don't take up as much room. I would like add as much roach as possible, using my mast with a 1/2" slot, and obviously not run into trouble with insufficient room inside the mast. If anyone has specific help with who manufactured their sail, how big the roach is, and whether you had trouble with the slot or storage inside the mast, I would be greatly appreciative.

The May 2006 Cruising World has an excellent article on A Better Breed of Mainsails. Includes full discussion of vertical battens, masts, etc.

I had only to ask...

Mail must be a little slower to Maine, but sure enough, Cruising World indeed has an extensive article. I also added a link from Hood's site, which covers the slot question nicely. I would still appreciate any real-world users and their thoughts and experiences. Thanks to Sherry and all who contribute.

Weighing in

I read the Hood article and the Cruising World article, and it's scary to think one could not get the sail wound back into the mast because of the battens. This thread is about to expire because of the time and space limitations on HOW, but I hope it can resume with answers to these vexing questions.
