Sailboat in water and the keel cable is broken. I am at a total loss as to whether I can drive the boat back onto the trailer or can I run a new cable thru the cable tube and go (under water) to the keel and secure the cable. How was the old cable attached to the keel? Then attach the new cable to the winch in the cabin. I am not sure if the old cable is still attached to the keel. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Problem

The cable is attached to the keel with a bolt. It is a very simple set up. If you want you can run a cable through the housing and down to your keel. The hole is big enough where possibly you could reattach with a clamp that would hold the cable until you could get it back on the trailer and repair it.I have rollers on my trailer so i could quite possibly pull my V222 on to it and as I did the keel would go up. Yet another possibility would be to run a cable down and loop the keel to haul it up until you can get it on the trailer and fix it. I put a double cable on mine, so if one breaks there is a back up. It works great. and I dont have to worry about a breakage.

the boat with the keel down should not be any trouble at all. I have a Mac 25 and a trailer with only bunks. On more than one occasion I have trailered the boat with the keel down, usually in high winds, to keep the boat lined up with the trailer. I do have to note that the launch site that I was at is fairly deep. Chris Mac25 Chara

Yes

The cable hooks to the keel the same way in both the 222 and 25!

Broken Keel Cable.

Same thing happened to me and my V21. I was able to pull the boat back onto the trailer with the trailer winch. The ramp was fairly shallow, and I just dragged the keel along the ramp while I lined up the boat. Then just ease it onto the trailer. The rear frame member of the trailer will push the keel back into the keel trunk. Just go slow and steady and make sure the boat stays straight. .-=gp=-.

What a weekend?

This weekend while lowering the swing keel on my Venture 222, the cable snapped. I had inspected the cable last fall...looked good but I guess Murphys Law is to blame. Anyway...I just used the winch to drag the boat back on the trailer (factory type) as another sailor wrote. I had just installed a larger winch (1500#) and a new strap, so it pulled up easier than I thought it would. To top it all off, on the way home one of my trailer wheel/tires decided to fall off!!! Guess the bolts worked loose since they were all gone! Lesson learned? Check your keel cable and wheel bolts often!

Why dont you guys

Run a double cable system. There is plenty of room on the V222 for two cables! Now I dont know about the 21, 25, or whatever, but I would think it would be about the same. With two cables if one breaks the back up can save a whole lot of grief! All you need is a little longer bolt through the keel, but just be sure that when the keel is raised, the bolt wont hit the fiberglass trunk in any way! Mine still had alot of room to play with. It really works GREAT!
