My big concern is why does the port side have a really bad crack yet the starboard side does not.
This could have happened while the boat was in a slip and not adequately tied up and went through a storm. Usually in a slip, the boat is tied to one side using fenders but if you don’t do a good job, the side where the boat is tied up can get banged up a bit.

I know this can happen from personal experience... Adding some additional backing/beefing up the area sounds like a good plan (but who knows, may not even be necessary).

Good luck, I really like those 21-22 foot Ventures.

I did get mine at HD and will check if I can find it there today.

I understand that your can find it at RV suppliers too.

I had totally forgotten about butyl tape for a sealant until just now! Thanks for the reminder!!:D
Know of any place besides online where I can get it? I've tried the usual HD route, but they act like they've never heard of the stuff...

Re: Venture 22: Reinforceing deckplate, hull, chainplate are

This is how I reinforced my chainplates to the hull (I used the old chainplate ends as I bought new ones). I also bought new chain plate "bezels" for the topside of the hull and used the old ones on the underside, using #10 SS pan head machine screws to hold it all together (with liberal amounts of 3M 4000 UV sealer as bedding).

Except for the part about using screws ( I'm still thinking the thing to do is use bolts thru the deck and backing plates, even if i have to use wood, if there is any way at all I can figure out how to make it work that close to the hull), I like that, Where did you get the new chain plates? It looks like you simply cut it the length you wanted then rounded off the edges on a grinder. Am I correct?
This raises a question I keep forgetting to ask, I now mixing different metals is a REALLY BAD idea, because of the corrosion, but does letting different grades of SS touch each other create the same problem?

UDGMatter, you can get the chainplates and the covers (bezels) from Blue Water Yachts (BWYACHTS.com). They have a nice parts catalog for Macgregors.
