I have the MAC Venture 22 (1982). I have the wind Keel which means I wind up and down my keel using the wench. When I am out in heavy wavy water my keel starts slamming back and forth causing the whole boat to shake to the point I am convinced this can't be good for the boat. The keel is lowered all the way and the winch is locked so it can't turn further. Is there something Im not doing here. Is there another cable supporting the keel that I don't know about. Help please summer almost over !!

Swing keels

If your three bolt holes are not worn, that is the pivot hole, the stop hole, and the lock-down bolt hole, and bolts are all tightened, you shouldnt have any banging! If you are not out on a lake, but instead are on the ocean, you should always lock your keel down with the lock down bolt, otherwise you are asking for trouble! All the holes should align when the keel is resting agains the stop bolt, that is if none are worn due to age! If worn or the pivot bolt is bent due to age, the fiberglass will have to be renewed, and a new pivot bolt put in!Both jobs are do it yourselfers. If you are sailing and hear a humming noise, that is your winch cable being to tight, so loosen it. The humming should also stop! If the keel is locked down, and the winch cable is to tight, it will vibrate like a guitar string!

dumb question

But I can access these holes with the boat in the water correct. Where exactly are they located... Thanks so much for your help.

Not sure

Not sure on a 22, but on a 25, there is a keel trunk in the middle of the boat in the interior. Pretty hard to miss, it's basically a fiberglass box that the head of the keel pivots from and goes up into when the keel is extended. You should have at least two plastic plugs you can remove to inspect the pivot bolt, and another you use to insert a lock-down bolt. The M-25 has an addtional bolt to access a bulkhead mount.

on the V222 They are visible inside

toward the front of the keel trunk. The uppermost is the stop bolt, the one midrange down the trunk is the lock bolt, and the bottom is the pivot bolt. they kind of are in an arched pattern toward the front of the keel trunk! Easily visible! I believe the only difference between the V222 which I have and the standard 22, was the V222 has a pop top!!!!
