I'm a 50+ year old newbie sailor just aquiring a Venture 21. Plan on trailering 150 miles as my sailing abilities are yet too questionable to attempt a 100+ mile maiden voyage. I own a 2000 4WD 6 cyl Jeep Wrangler with a heavy duty tow package, which seems suitable enough to transport my new toy. However, I do need some info on an appropriate trailer which I am hoping to rent for the delivery to my new home port. If anyone can help me out with this endeavor, I'd be most obliged. Thanks! Ken W

where?

Where are you? I would think this might be a hard trailer to rent!

Hard to rent trailer

I'm on the east end of Long Island, NY. I see tons of idle trailers in boat yards which will only be used again by their owners after Labor Day. I thought it possible to borrow (rent) the right one for a day trip but I need to find out some specs for the trailer.

Long Island, long way

Long Island is a LONG way from Wales Island, sorry. My trailer looks to be customized, it has very high bunks and an articulated roller frame at the back-4 large rollers each side- with a notch to let the keel pass thru.

Needs a trailer under the boat

I know it may seem pushy but do you intend to keep the 21 in the water year round? I think you would be money ahead to purchase a new, or used trailer for this boat. You could obtain (beg, borrow, buy or steal) a large flatbed or wrecker and build a stand for it and haul it home that way. Still think you'll want a trailer for this boat. Should be many to choose from if you advertize. Steve P.

I Would Try A Sailboat

Dealer near you. If you tell them Venture 21, they should know what you need and would probally rent it to you. After you get the boat you will want to find a sailing dealer anyway for ? and goodies you will need or want. I'm sure you will truly enjoy that boat! Cheers, Brian

Thanks for the advice

Want to thank you guys for all your help. I'm sure I'll be back in here begging for advice in the future (stinks to be a greenhorn). I can understand now how the brotherhood of sailing came about. I can also understand why there's so many yo yos on the water... because they DON'T take the advice of seasoned sailers such as yourselves. Thanks again, Ken W

V21 Trailer.

Ken, I just replaced my trailer, I bought a junk boat and trailer from a friend - I'm sure there are plenty on Craigslist. I gave away the boat and re-bunked the trailer. It's worked very well so far. I was able to replace my trailer with a very well built (probably overbuilt) motorboat trailer. The junk boat was an 18' Caravelle, the trailer was exactly the same length as my rusty and bent MacGregor trailer. I was able to use off-the-shelf components from West Marine to re-build the bunks. The total cost for me was $200.00 for the crappy boat/trailer and about $50.00 is parts. It took me about a day to rebunk the trailer and float the boat onto the new trailer. Getting rid of old boats/trailers is easy - post it for free on Craigslist. .-=gp=-.

other option opened

Thanks Chutz - You've opened up a new option for me. I've been kicking tires for a week now but nothing seems to fit the bill. I'll check Craigslist as suggested. Thanks! Ken W

Re-bunking.

Ken, I had really good luck with re-bunking. I measured the distance between the two bunks, then placed a 2x4 under the keel and supported it on both sides and leveled it. This way I was able to measure the distance between the bottom of the (retracted) keel and the bunks, from this I derived how high the bunks must be in relation to the keel. I was able to transfer this measurement to the new trailer and set the bunk risers accordingly. Keep in mind that the bunks will bend in the middle (as they should to hug the hull shape). I added an extra four inches to account for this too. When I finished that part, I took it to the boat ramp and floated the boat on a rainy day (less competition for the ramp). I was lucky enough to hit it perfectly on the first try. I've since adjusted the front of the bunks down by two inches and the back up by 2 inches. This just facilitates getting the boat on the trailer easily. I lucked out with the width of the trailer, I hadn't really given it much thought, but my V21 sits perfectly between the wheel fenders. This would also be an important measurement. Good Luck. .-=gp=-.
