HOW Editorial

63% of owners say they have better than adequate cabin ventilation while at anchor, according to last week's Quick Quiz. Are you getting enough fresh air? Would you like to open a few more ports... or close a few for good? Air your opinions here.

If only there was a way...

If only there was a way to replace the two fixed ports in the hull on each side of the aft berth with water tight but opening ports so there would be cross ventilation on the aft berth. I have a 29.5 but almost every Hunter I've seen would benefit from this. Has anyone seen a solution to this?

Interesting Idea

At the Chesapeake Rendezvous, it was HOT! One of the more interesting ideas that I saw there for cooling was a 23.5 that had its forward hatch open and a big box fan laying over the opening. It was plugged into the docks shore power. Not at the Rendezvous, but I've also seen household window A/C units fitted into the hatchway where the pin boards go.

Day-Night Vents

Had two day-night solar powered vents put in my new H240. Can tell a big difference compared to my H22 when it comes to the boat being dryer and cooler. If you don't mind cutting 4" holes through your roof to install these, they are the way to go for water tight ventilation. David s/v Divine Spark

Hot in the Aft

We have tried every combination in the book for increasing air flow into the aft cabin of our 450. A wind scoop works fairly well as long as there are greater than 10 mph winds, but we mostly sleep in the front berth as long as there are no guests aboard. The air comes into the front berth like a hurricane even in a light breeze.

Really!

I am surprised that so many feel they have adequate ventilation. How accurate is this survey? Did only the southern contingent with their air-conditioned boats respond? Or did I misinterpret the question? I guess if there is air moving through the boat then that is sufficient, even if it is 90 degree air.

Need to know use ..

Ed, those figures would have more meaning if they were tied to how people used their boats. The 37% who are dissatisfied with their ventilation may be virtually everyone who sleeps on the boat or lives on the boat, without air conditioning. The 63% who are satisfied may be all of the folks who either (a) use their boat only for daysailing or (b) have AC.

Too Hot Aft!

On a hot evening it is impossible to sleep in the aft cabin of my '90 Legend 37. Have spent many nights on deck just to survive. Would appreciate any ideas on creating positive ventilation aft. Air flow thru the forward cabin is a completely different story. One can hardly deal with all the breeze. Rick

Hella Fans

We've added the $50 version of the Hella Fans in the aft cabin as well as 3 in the salon. Really helps the aft cabin, and the salon if there is a group there.

aft ventalation

At anchor I place a home 110 Volt window fan between the aft cabin and the nav station and run it off a small inverter. It work great I also have 6 small 12 volt fans located around the boat.

Ventilation vs. AC

Adequate ventilation implies that the opening hatches allow air motion through the craft. Ventilation can but not necarrialy control the temperature of all that fresh air. That's for AC. I do agree that air motion in the quarter berth is restricted. We installed fans to help the situation, but desire a better fix. Can't locate a flat surface large enough to mount a pair of solar vents over the quarter berth area. Any more ideas? Ron

Aft cabin Solution

I have a Hunter 40.5 which has 2 vents which port to the stern through 3 inch flex hose. I installed 2 12 volt engine room exhaust blower fans in line with the 3 inch hose, and put a 12 volt adjustable speed control on the fans. We get a terrific amount of fresh air in the aft this way, and leave the fans on very low speed when off the boat to keep the boat well vented.
