ventilation/ 022 carburetor question

I've been having a great time this summer getting to know my new Vega. Latest success has been with the spinnaker, which I've been flying recently for the first time and haven't wrapped around the forestay yet. I'm running the sheets/guys through blocks attached to eyes which are bolted to the gunnel about 40cm forward of the pushpit. Is this what those fittings are intended for? I was thinking of blocking off the air intake in the cockpit well, thinking it didn't do much. Is there a consensus that the ventilation system works? I ask because there seems so little space for air to escape through the top of the mast. The original white lining in my boat is intact and looks and works well to inhibit condensation. My 022, which a year ago I had assumed was scrap, has been amazing. Well, maybe I should say it's been really good so far. One hitch. Sometimes after I've run it for just a little while, say ten minutes, fuel comes out of the air intake. This continues for quite a while and a cubic centimetre or two comes out in total, which is a little alarming. Has anyone dealt with this? Is it the nature of the beast? Thanks for any advice Carl

Hi Carl,   I too am relocating the vent in the cockpit, I don’t like the idea of water being able to make it’s way into the cabin if something goes wrong. I am hard piping a new venting system that under worst conditions I can shut down until the dust clears. I am bringing fresh air in and installing a blower to pull air out. In totally retro fitting my boat, I have found a lot of little things that can be done to make things work better and safer. There is so much on the market today that wasn’t in 1976, it only makes sense to take advantage of the goodies for a better boat. Larry Sent from Windows MailFrom: n4lbl alan.schulman@... I had similar problem. You have to detach carburetor and wash it carefully. You alsow need to check a floating balls(make sure it work as expected).

Thanks to those who have offered advice. I'll focus on the float chamber and its valve.CarlTo: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.comFrom: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.comDate: Mon, 1 Sep 2014 21:02:53 -0700Subject: [AlbinVega] Re: ventilation/ 022 carburetor question

Hi Carl.It is not normal if fuel goes through carburetors air-take. I would say it dangerous. I am a new owner of Vega and had the same problem during launch. Marina mechanic charge me $250 to fix but it start leaking again after I moved my Vega to Yacht club slip. You have to detach carburetor, and double check how float is work with carburetor bowl. My has two float connected with metal plate, and distance between float was little bit wide than bowls bottom, so when fuel comes out - float goes down. If distance between float wide then required float stuck at the bottom and fuel overflow through air intake. If you tap to carburetor body float may work again. All I did disassemble carburetor and adjust distance between floats and check how it work before reassemble and re-install carburetor. Now my carburetor and engine work excellent.Thank you.Tym #1183 BRIZO
