Vented loop with black water? 40.5- hidden loop

I am trying to replace the old Jabsco on my Hunter 40.5 with the PHII. When I removed the vented loop that goes from the top of the pump to the back of the toilet, black water came out. My question is: should this happen? If not, do I need to cut into my fiberglass and replace this hidden vented loop, or should hooking up the new toilet fix the problem? Thanks...

Doubt Anything Wrong

The vented loop is not hidden. It is behind the curved corner panel on the left side of your aft head. over the left side cabinet. There are decorative caps over the screws. In the forward head the siphon break is accessed through a panel on the v-berth side of the head compartment, near the bookshelf as I recall. However, I sure would not replace it. Rather, simply pump some vinegar through the system before you remove the Jabsco, or when you install the new head if the Jabsco is already out. The intake hose is good quality and should be fine, and there is little to go wrong in the vented loop. The valve is it and you can just clean it if needed, which I doubt it does. Those loops are located pretty high so there isn't much standing water in them when not in use. Rick D.

I don't think it was black water (sewage)

I suspect it was stagnant intake sea water, which left to sit, is what makes the first flush when you come aboard again smell like sewage or rotten eggs. As Rick said, flushing the system thoroughly with clean fresh water and some white vinegar will clean out the plumbing.. Be sure to replace the vented loops in your new PH II as shown in the installation instructions.
