Vented loop spitting water

Dear Peggy, I never stop singing your praises to my shipmates - 4 years since I rebuilt my entire sanitation system according to your directions, and it has worked incredibly well...till now. I recently replaced an ancient Groco HC head with a new HF (space issues), and the pumping/suction action is all much better. On the first day of real use (guests), I noticed that the vented loop on the outgoing hose (but not the incoming) is spitting a lot of water when I pump. The pumping also seems very hard, especially in the wet flush mode. It is harder on the out-pump stroke than the water-intake stroke, but that is hard too(maybe from better suction on the intake) The dry flush pumps easier, but liquid still spits from the vented loop on every stroke. If I had to guess, I would guess there is some obstruction in the outtake hose past the vented loop, so the higher head pressure forces water through the closed vent. I switched the little flapper valve in the vent with the intake one, and the same thing happened, so I don't think the valve is malfunctioning. The valves are duckbill-side-down....I'm stumped. Many thanks, RichRSD14@aol.com

Prob'ly time to replace both valves...

They do wear out. But it's also highly possible that there's sea water mineral buildup in your head discharge hose that has reduced the diameter enough to create some backpressure. Pull it off and take a look. If that's not the problem, check your tank vent. If it's even partially blocked, it would create backpressure. Don't use the head or attempt to pump out till sure it's completely open. As for why your toilet has gotten hard to pump...if it's at least a year old, it prob'ly needs lubricating. But backpressure from a blocked tank vent would also make it hard to pump as the tank pressurizes. I don't think there's any obstruction in your head discharge line other than possible mineral buildup...it has to be that or a blocked tank vent.
