Vented loop question

I had some problems this weekend with my overboard discharge line on my Hunter 376. I ahve a jabsco and I know you're not a big fan of these, but I have a couple questions: 1. We had problems pumping the bowl dry while pumping overboard. Pumping back into the holding tank was fine, just overboard was the problem. Alot of back pressure, like it was plugged. To make a long story short (no plugged or clogged lines) after we replaced the vented loop rubber nipple, it seemed to work fine. Can you explain what happened? What caused what felt like a "plugged" hose? 2. Is there a better solution to that little rubber nipple valve? BTW, I have your book too. Thanks, Bob F.

No, there isn't a better solution than the nipple

Without it, the vented loop would squirt waste. Some people THINK that putting a vent line on it instead is a better solution, but the line is so small that it quickly becomes blocked by the same sea water minerals and minerals that clogged up your air valve...turning the vented loop into an UNvented loop that no longer has any ability to break a siphon. The solution to your problem: air valves are NOT maintenance free...they require cleaning a few times a year. So clean it occasionally...replace it when cleaning doesn't solve the problem.
