peggie, i read your book and am installing my new plumbing system now. on the tank vent, my tank is below waterline. i'm running the vent from the tank in the v-berth horizontally into the head then i have to run up the hull wall to a thru hull just below the rub rail. i'm trying to keep the thru hull as high as possible so when i'm heeled over, it's out of the water as much as possible. on the thru-hull, i was going to put a 90* fitting pointing down and connect the vent to it. i know it's not the best thing to do but if i run the hose up to the thru-hull, i have to bend it 90* to attach to the thru-hull anyway. is this my only option or could i mount the thru-hull lower on the hull but above the waterline. i thought it was best to keep it out of water when heeled as much as possible.

You're running the vent the wrong direction

When the tank is in the bow, the vent should come of the top of the tank at the bow end of it and go forward--far enough forward to keep a vent thru-hull that's about a foot below the toe rail out of the water even if your rails are buried. That may mean putting a new vent fitting in the tank and drilling a hole for a new vent thru-hull. Relocating the tank fitting is easy, thanks to a li'l doodad called the UniSeal http://www.aussieglobe.com/uniseal1.htm Make it a 1" vent and use a 1" bulkhead thru-hull. By running the vent forward, air will always be forced into the tank to keep it aerobic...and therefore, odor free. You might want to read my book again.

Peggie, thanks

i was going to install the thru-vent tomorrow so it won't be a problem to re-route it. my ronco tank should be showing up next week so i can take a see how the vent location will work with the new setup.

You should still have the drawing you sent to Ronco

So you should be able to see where you spec'd the vent fitting. If you didn't put it at the bow end, it may not be too late to call 'em to ask 'em to move it. But even if it is in the wrong place, if they haven't shipped it yet, they can put a new 1" fitting in and supply and threaded plug for the one in the "wrong" location.
