Peggy, I know that you recommend using a 3/4" vent line, but what type of fitting do you put on the hull? All of the vent fittings with screens that I have seen are for ~ 1/2" hose. Thanks, Stan

Use an open bulkhead fitting

Screens on holding tank vents cause more problems than they solve...'cuz they get clogged up with dust, pollen, etc,..corrosion 'cuz they rust out very quickly...waste in the event of a spill. An open fitting allows more air exhange, and makes it much easier to backflush the line when you wash the boat.

Are bugs a problem?

Peggy, I trust your judgement completely, it is just that I have heard of bugs inhabiting your holding tank. I don't know anyone personally though. Is it a real concern or just an old wife's tale? Thanks, Stan

That is why we backflush it on every.....

Stan: Depending on where you live (area of the country), this can be a problem. We have spiders and mud daubers. They like to use the vents as a nest. This is why I back flush the vent hose on the head every time I pump out the holding tank. I also let me water tank overflow to flush it out too. On my fuel tank I sometimes need to clean out with a stick or something.

Occasionally a bug or wasp

can get into a vent line and get stuck, but the odds of it happening are far smaller than they are of a screen becoming clogged or waste clogging the vent at the tank fitting. And with or without a screen, dirt daubers like to build nests in all through-hulls, not just holding tank vents. Which is why it's so important to check all thru-hulls regularly and backflush the the holding tank vent line every time you wash the boat. However, I've NEVER heard of any bugs actually taking up residence IN a holding tank.
