The picture of the leader today at the Vendee Globe race (found at the Vendeeglobe site) shows the boat to be on what they call port gybe. Wind off the port quarter according to the wind weather map. Why are the sails trimmed to the centerline?

Probably because they're actually sailing close hauled on a port tack. If you look at the wind gen, it is weather cocked to face the wind more likely than not, which shows it to be coming from about 35˚ off the port bow.

Actually, I think they use stock photo's for most of their updates. There are a long way from land and I don't think they fly out a photo airplane every day

Thanks for your time on this. I was starting to think exactly along those lines. How did they take that and it looks like a port tack, so it must be some kind of stock photo and not some unique race/boat trim situation.
