Anyone following the Vendee Globe. Just started over the weekend and already 2 boats out with damage. 1 broke his rudder after colliding wih debris under the water and the 2nd has a collision with a fishing trawler while sleeping. He had AIS alrm set, but trawler did not have AIS.

Should be an interesting race. Samantha Davies is my favorite. Last race 2009 she placed 4th. I love her enthusiasm.

I will keep my eyes on fellow countrymen, Gutek from Poland. He sails older boat but in this race boat is only part of success

The Bel boat was my wife's favorite. She likes the laughing cow cheese.
I would love to be in that race. Heck any big boat race.

I think just surviving is 80% of the race. I could not believe how many boats dropped out last time after hitting a submerged object and damaging the boat.

I like the race, but solo non-stop around the world at the bottom is not my idea of fun. I admire those that can do it.

I followed him in the Velux 5 Oceans as well. He did very well considering what he went through.

that is really interesting, but Im a cruiser. I salute all of them racing. It is exciting to watch and I will leave it to those more suited to it...

A single-hand RACE around the world, what could go wrong with that ...

Another boat has collided with a fishing trawler without AIS activated. Loius Buton appears headed back to the start. Louis had both AIS and radar activated. Not sure why it would not have warned him.

asleep at the wheel?
Actually, yes. In both collisions with fishing boats the skipper of the Vendee boat was grabbing a few winks. AIS & Radar were on but if they're wooden fishing boats or fiberglass, they might not have shown up on the radar, and probably no AIS transmitter on them either.

On a solo, non-stop race they have to sleep sometime and rely on radar and AIS to warn them of other boats or ships. Once they get to the southern ocean it will less of a worry.

  1. Trawlers don't have to have an AIS. Only ships greater than 300 tons.
  2. Radar does not reliably detect other vessels. Sea state, weather, vessel construction, user skills, radar filter settings, can all make radar useless for accident avoidance warning.
  3. Southern ocean? - see sea state, above.
  4. A ship must maintain a watch. Always.
  5. Crazy French pro sailors are giving us all a bad name. Look how they've misled that poor English girl ! :snooty:

Samantha Davies has dismasted. She's safe, but now out of the race. Really too bad becasue she had a much more enthusiasm than most of the others.

Are we sure its a race? It seems to be more of a smash up derby. Whats out now 20%? At this rate it there wont be anyone left by the end of the 5th week!
Aren't they sailing into pirate territory soon? Hmm.
Hope everyone does ok.
