Vega Website updated - Chuck and Laura's Cruising pages

Chuck and Rose,

When you are in Port Townsend, if you are going to be stopping by Brion Toss
rigging in the old marina (Point Hudson) say hi for me. Brion and his crew
did my new mast and rigging for my Vega two years ago so he is very familiar
with the Vega. Brion is the author of many books on rigging and knots
including "The Riggers Apprentics" and "Chapman Book of Knots." One of the
premier riggers around. Port Townsend sails (Carol Hasse) is also located
just above Brion's shop.

I am rebuilding my Vega now in Everett Washington just down I-5 from
Bellingham. I have been following your adventure from Hawaii and would like
to get together with you and talk Vega as well as your future travels south
(I did Seattle to Mexico and was in Mexico for a few year on the boat in
the late 90s before I crossed to Tahiti (in an HR39 not a Vega). I am
thinking about taking the Vega back down in a year or so once I get rid of
the course writing duties for USPS.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and hope we can get together - at least I can
buy you dinner some night maybe - or if you need any help with Lealea
perhaps I can lend a hand or whatever.

Thanks,

Chris

Chuck - Which section did you update? I can't find it - maybe I'm just not
looking in the right place. If you're in Port Townsend, look at Boat Haven
for my friend Chris Grace of the Concordia yawl Lotus. He may be able to help
you out with referrals on repairs. Just ask around, most people in PT know
him.

Hi Peter and Arne,

When I hit refresh, it just keeps bringing up the May 24 entry. I don't
understand why I cannot get the update if everyone else can. I tried typing in
the web address anew instead of just clicking on the link, but that did not
work either. I don't know what else to try since I am not a computer geek.

Hi Chris,

Yes, I've read Brion's books and followed his advice when I re-rigged
Lealea several years ago.

It would be great to meet up with you. Now in Port Townsend boat
Haven. Will be checking around on Monday for services we need as the
folks here don't seem to work on weekends (How strange) This place is
great! The marina features all the amenities plus fresh fish market,
and a brewery! We poked our heads in to the PT Yacht Club and got
invited to their lasagna nite (With open bar) and all I had to do was
stand up and tell our sea stories.

email us and I'll give you our new cell phone number so we can hook up.

Melanie,

You may have to do it the old fashioned way - clear the cache or even
delete temporary internet files from the file manager.

Trust me, the update is there. I just checked. On the main cruising
page there is a new photo of Lealea at Neah Bay and an additon to the
"The Plan" sidebar titled "The Reality". On my log page there is a
new entry and a few photos.

There will be a lot more soon as we can put it all together. Laura
has a lot of material and so does Bree. Lots of photos too. Coming
as soon as we can get reliable internet service.

Aloha,

Chuck

HI Everyone!

I am looking for advice for my MD6A. I encountered problems with her an a 6 day single handed EPIC of a trip this past week. I ended up replacing fuel filters and all of that, but as the engine ran longer, I started getting this smell up in the cockpit that was originating from the engine itself. It was not smoking per see, but there was a bit of smoke coming off the engine wherever the oil or diesel seemed to be dripping or running onto the block (somewhere). The cabin, the clothes, and fabric below decks now have a diesel or chemical smell that is awful. I was unable to go below and steer and sail, so I am afraid I can't give an exact location of the above mentioned leak, but I was wondering if anyone else might have experienced something similar to this with their MD6A?

Any suggestions?
Many Thanks
Chris

I forgot to mention that I had placed and absorbent cloth beneath the engine to absorb small spills and whatnot, only to find it soaked in black fluid that looked like oil but smelled as though diesel was mixed in...????

Hi Chris

Could be seals gone in lift pump or injector pump whih allows diesel
into the sump. Check the oil level and see if it is high...

Cheers

Steve,
The oil level did look a bit high. There appeared to be a bit more whitish colored smoke out of the exhaust the further and longer I powered? Is that a difficult job (either the lift pump or injector pump)?

Hi Timo,

Success at last! Right clicking on refresh from the drop-down menu made all
the difference! I don't understand why that worked when clicking refresh on
the menu bar did not, but hey, who cares? It worked! Thanks to you and to
everyone else who offered their suggestions. I am slowly getting better with
the computer.

Smooth Sailing,

Hi Chris

Lift pump is easy, injector pump is a job for a diesel shop expert as
they have to clean, calibrate and replace. I have a guy here that does
it and charges £120 all in but I have to take injector pump to him. I
usually have a refurb one in stock most of teh time. Drop me an email
off forum for details.

Cheers

Will do Steve!

Probably headed up to the boat on Tuesday to assess what is going on. I will check the oil level again, clean the engine with degreaser and see what is going on while running on the ball.

Contact you offline!
Thanks Steve
