Vega Newsletter

Well, the question is: what about the newsletter? Does anyone know
if
anyone has stepped forward to pick up where Sidney left off? I
talked
it over with my wife and have come to the decision that, if no one
has
volunteered yet, I will step up to the plate and try to carry on for
Sid. I have publishing software and I have published a newsletter
before, for Hawaii Paddlers Club, so I know what's involved. The
only
problem is that I don't think I still have my copy of the last issue
so I don't know who to contact to find out if someone else has
already
volunteered for the job. Also, I would of course, need the mailing
list and records of who has paid thier dues. I'd be willing to
absorb
the costs of publishing and mailing for the remainder of the year
and
manage the other little things Sid took care of like handling the
distribution of stuffing box grease, burgees and the video etc. I've
been a beneficiary of Sid's generosity since I joined VODCA more than
ten years ago. It's the least I can do

Well, what do you think? Any support for this idea? Anyone know how
to contact someone who has custody of the records?

Chuck,

If you are serious, you should go to Sid's relatives and get them to
download to disk all his files, and send them to you, as this would be SO
much more effective. I think they would be VERY happy to do
so............. as I recall they even invited such a move in the last
news letter.......

Hal

Chuck --

I agree that if you are willing to step forward, then "Go for
it". The worst thing that can happen is for nothing to
happen. Sid left such a wonderful example to follow. I believe that
there are lots of us willing to help. I am an IT Senior Systems Consultant
working with systems implementation so I could offer technical help.

Here are my 2 cents worth: First step is to contact the
family at Sid's address, and ask them for the full mailing list. This
contains current and past members. I received Sid's last newsletter, but
my membership had lapsed, so they have the complete file. (I was trying to
renew using the web site, but found that it was not operational.)
Then I suggest a mailing to the full membership asking who would be
interested in working on a newsletter team and a web site team. Let's keep
Sid's efforts going!

Hi Chuck, I applaud you decision to carry on the Vega newsletter. Like other
members in the club, I neither posses the necessary skills or expertise in
producing a newsletter. I and other members will surely appreciate your
efforts in producing the newsletter for the enjoyment and benefit of all. We
all thank you. Walt

Proofed the newsletter last night. I need to make a couple of minor
corrections then I will put it to bed tonight and should have it in
the mail tomorrow. Now accepting contributions (written material,
not money) for the October and December issues d;^)

I had an idea last night, well, actually it was Laura's idea; let's
try to get photos of everyones Vega to publish in the NL. There are
three in the Ala Wai Harbor where I live and one Nawiliwili, Kauai
where I visit for business frequently and I have heard of another in
Kaneohe. I think I'll start by publishing photos of My boat and Doug
Lupton's (If you don't mind Doug). It occurs to me that this may be
a way to get a few more members; take pics of thier boat and publish
them and then give the owner a complimentary copy of the NL and
invite them to subscribe. What do you think?

I can receive digital photos via e-mail at phd@... or mail me
snapshots and I can scan them.

Aloha,

Chuck

Thanks Brian,

Great photo and a nice looking Vega!

I assume you're referring to the price of a subscription/membership
dues, since your name is not on Sid's membership list. Sid was
collecting US$10 for domestic (US) memberships and US$15, I believe,
for International memberships. I'll have to do this for a year
before I can really nail down the cost but it looks like these rates
will just cover the cost of printing and postage so I'll leave them
as is for now.

To keep things simple, I'll do as Sidney did and make all renewals
due the first of the year. Any subscriptions I receive starting now
will run until December 2001. I'll send the most recent issue on
receipt of a subscription payment and continue until Dec '01.

For those of you who are not on Sidney's list but have sent your
dues in, send me your snail mail address and I'll send this issue out
to you on faith. I'll straighten out the membership/subscription
issue after I get Sidney's records from Shelly.

Aloha,

Chuck Rose

Hi Chuck,

Just received the newsletter in today's mail. Nice job. I've been meaning to
write up an article about my Vega, Erendira (2947), but I've been busy
working my ass off. Labor Day will be my first anniversary sailing her. I
bought Erendira in 1997, spent two years refitting her, and on September 6,
1999, I sailed her on the Bay for the first time. Actually, it was the first
time she'd been sailed in eight years!

I really love her. She's solid. What more can I say...

Anyway, I'll try to get something together for the next issue.

Hey, thanks for taking on this project.

Hi Gang,

Apologies to all American Vega Assn. members. The Newsletter, of
course, is late. Last week Friday when I came back from dropping the
disk off at the printer my boss sent me on (yet another)unscheduled
week long business trip. I just got back at noon today. I'll get it
in the mail as soon as possible, with luck, tomorrow. Thanks for
your patience and understanding. You know the old saying, "Work is
the curse of the boating class".

New members, your copies of "The Book" will be in the mail shortly
afterwards. I need to get some printed and the office equipment
isn't working good enough so it will take me a few extra days.

Speaking of new members; I notice several names on the e-list that
are not members of the Association. I invite you to join. The
benefits are many and the cost is ridiculously small, still only $10
per year for US residents and $15 for International subscriptions.
"The Book" alone is more than worth the price for any Vega owner or
anyone considering a Vega.

Aloha,

FINALLY!! Finished the NL today. My computer is giving me a few
problems (The file is VERY large) but I hope to convert it to pdf for
the printer and drop it off tonight so I can get them in the mail
this weekend.

What do you all think about making a text-only or zipped pdf version
available via email?

Mid Pacific (Hawaii) Rendezvous:

I went to Kauai Tuesday and met with the Nawiliwili Yacht Club's
board of directors. They have agreed to co-host the Rendezvous and
to add a Vega class to thier annual Labor Day weekend race from
Nawiliwili to Hanalei. I agreed to change the date to September 1-3
to fit thier schedule. So as of this date, we have a Race and post
race party at Hanalei Bay on Saturday with NYC and there will be a
luau (Hawaiian underground barbeque and party) probably Sunday back
at Nawiliwili but possibly ashore at Hanalei. More details in the
Newsletter.

Hi Chuck,

I've no problems whatsoever with an electronic copy of the newsletter. I've
a high-speed (DSL) connection into the internet. If you want you can just
send me a PDF copy via email, and I'd be a happy camper.

You might want to make a list of Vega members who would accept a PDF version
via email, and those who rather have the hard copy mailed to them. Not
everyone in the association has email. Zipping the file might compress it
enough so that download times for people with 56 Kbs modems won't be waiting
too long for the download to complete. In either case, you'd be saving some
costs, which is better than saving nothing at all.

Oh, you know if you're ISP provides an FTP service, you can always upload
the PDF there, and let people know how to access it. Actually, I have an FTP
site with my provider, if you want you can upload it to that, and I think I
can password protect it so that only Vega members can get to it.

Chuck,
I'd be happy to download a PDF file and print the newsletter here (and
not receive one by mail) to help cut your expenses. Don't do it by
email attachment, though--then everyone would be forced to download it
and there'll be some grumbling because of transmission time! Depending
on its size, however, you should be able to post it in the AlbinVega
files section at the yahoogroups site.
Regards,
Tom L.

Great idea, Tom. Chuck, a number of us would
be happy to pull down our own copy and cut down on the number of copies that you
have to have printed and mailed. I like it. Poll the group and
see how many copies you can cut out!
