melanie & paul, glad to know of another vega in ME. i may have met paul years ago, someone gave me a copy of some instructions about taking apart the transmission on volvo penta, and an address for sid rosen i think, the guy who ran the vega new letter until he died - he died before i could ever sign up for that news letter... my vega penelpoe, vega # 2133 is in my cousin's yard on frenchman bay. we have spent some time & $ "renovating" my vega, new beta marine engine ( there are various parts of the volvo in my garage - the shaft & prop went to
pollard, the guy from va who write on the web site & knows so much about engines) new wiring, head & holding tank system, thru-hulls... lots. the cousin found a sail & canvas place in rockland. we will sail there to have a new dodger fitted some time this summer. a new mainsail is being made up by a sail making group an old school friend works with in FL and we've fitted a roller furling jib system, & found an almost new roller furling jib, which works beautifully. we'll run the halyards back into the cockpit. i intend to sail south this fall, god, health, & family willing. if youre ever this side of mt desert, please drop by sorrento harbor, we have two visitor moorings with a spectacular view of mt desert...

Yes, Newbold, we have met, but it has been a long while! In fact, we kept Double Fantasy moored in Sorrento Harbor from 1984 to 1986, when we left for our cruise down the eastern seaboard to Florida. Last summer I had hoped to organize that Maine Vega gathering in Belfast, Maine, but that all went down the drain when unforeseen circumstances kept Double Fantasy parked in our driveway. Unsure whether we will launch this year either--are hoping to, but it might be late! There have been other years we have not launched until July, but then we often leave her in until late October.

Would love to get together sometime in July or August, perhaps over a cup of coffee or drink, to see your Vega and hear about your plans. Paul and I are getting itchy feet for an extended cruise sometime in the next year or two!

Smooth Sailing,

Melanie Halvachs
