vega for sale

With all these messages lately about buying a Vega, it makes me sad to
say that we are selling our 1968 Vega, Aquila. Hopefully the equipment
list and pictures are attached to this message. We are asking $7500.
It's a great price for this boat, it just needs more attention than we
can currently devote to it. It is located about 20 miles southeast of
Chicago at a marina and has a trailer (with electric brakes).

Please contact me directly at zacok@... for more details.

Dear Diane, I have been interested in the Vega for some time. I now have a
compac 19 with trailer both in very good shape. Is it possible that you
would consider a trade with some good to boot for your side?

I noticed in the May issue of the Chesapeake Bay magazine an ad for
a Vega for sale for $500.00 with the notation "Inbd probably shot."
This boat was donated to the Rotary Club for a charity sale. The
location is Shipwright Harbor, Deale, MD, 410-867-7686

At this price the boat may be gone by now, but I went to look at it
Saturday and here is some more info. The hull number was 265 (or
268, I don't exactly remember which). The original Albin gas engine
was installed, in an unknown condition. There are no sails and the
boom is missing. They want someone to just drive it off the lot. It
has an outboard bracket.

The biggest problem is the severe cracking of the gelcoat. These
cracks cover the entire deck and topsides. A lot of these cracks are
wide enough to slip a credit card in. The cracks are black inside.
Unless you wanted to spend months gouging out each crack and filling,
the entire gelcoat probably would have to be ground off. (I'm not a
boat surveyer or have a lot of repair experience, so take my opinion
for what it is worth). The boat has been sitting in the water for at
least 4 years so the bottom is probably badly fouled.

The decks appeared to be solid except for a portion on the starboard
side, off the forward corner of the cabin top. There was a noticable
crunching sound when you stepped there. Don't know if it was gelcoat
crunching or an indication of delamination. The stanchions and
chainplates (U-bolt thingies) appeared solid. It was hard to look
for stress cracking with all the general gelcoat cracking, but I
didn't seem to notice any radiating from stanchions or chainplates or
the mast. However the rear, port, pulpit mount was noticably loose
and the screws were at odd angles.

The metal bracket holding the tiller was cracked and the tiller was
very loose fitting.

The insides appeared to be original. The liner inside the cabinets
is pealing off. The windows are in very bad shape and very weak. I
don't know what material is covering the cabin sides around the
windows, but is was pealing off from around the windows. There was
water down in the bilge almost to the top of the sole.

I found the USD$500 very tempting, but when I started to think about
all the hours and energy needed to fix up that gelcoat, I couldn't
honestly say, that I had it in me to do all that work.

Ken, I tried to respond to your email but it bounced back. Thanks
for the suggestion of having a diver do some cleaning before moving
the boat. I had not thought of that and will look into it.

Oh my!

:)

borrow/rent a larger (9.9 hp or a little bit larger)
outboard motor, take a radio, and put an inflatable
raft on the deck.

Go with the tide.

Don't need a boom to use a head sail. Buy/borrow/beg
for somebodys' second hand head sail. Might get you a
few more knots.

Then relax and enjoy the trip

( assuming seaworthiness is not an issue)Try

Sailnet has a number of different lists that you might
be interested in. I don't know of a Vega List
specifically, but they have fiberglass, motors, gear,
etc, etc, lists you can join.

Best of Luck! :)

6 hp would move it fine.. i doubt i would try to move it that way though..
better to drag it back to the house and fix it up... worth the work, if a
yard did the work it would cost many many thousands.. but doing it yourself
will be well worth it...

I would like to help you with this. Do you have an outboard motor mount
on this boat? Frank Pace (301) 342-3573 is the person to talk to about the
Gas Engine power sprayer at the West Basin on Pax. My Vega is there and I
would definately like to see yours and compare notes.

consider a tow?
