Vega as a first boat? and sails

Roy's comment about having the sails up is very true. Last
weekend we ran out of wind on the way from San Francisco Bay to
Half Moon. Closing in on the destination I took the main
down--no wind after all--to get ready for harbor. Immediately I
noticed the difference in motion. She started rolling in the
swells. I hoisted the main and motored into harbor with a much
more comfortable ride.

It's a great boat, the longer you have her the more you'll like
her.

On that line - mainsail as steadying sail - we sheet the main in pretty tight and then take a short line from a cleat near the end of the boom to one of the sheet cleats on the coming. Made taut, that line completely stops boom movement (and so makes the main much better at steadying the boat), makes the boom a better grab for going forward, keeps the boom from whacking someone as the sail may flog. We leave this line (which we call the "snotter", a name borrowed from part of a spritsail rig) on when we put the boat away. The boom stays steady and I believe reduces some wear, from the otherwise constant movement, on the gooseneck and everything else attached to the boom.

Works like a charm. I made mine up from a short piece of 3 strand, with an eye splice that just fits over the boom cleat.Nicholas Walsh

Hey Victor,

I remember you mentioned you were thinking about a trip to Half Moon
bay. Any more details about your trip? How was the trip back?
