Vega 1005: Missing valve on original head seacock

Hello!
One of the problems with my recently bought Vega 1005 is that the seacock connected to the head has sometime in the past lost its handle, reducing it to being operated with a spanner. During our transit trip home one of my crewmembers "lost the position" of the valve, ie. turning it forward when he should have turned it backwards to close it.

So, my question is:
How to tell when the seacock is closed? It seems that while the head lever is in 'dry bowl' position the water disappears from the head when I pump, no matter in which position the seacock is in. The pump might give more resistance in some positions, though

I'll have to go and find a new handle for the valve as soon as possible.

Having read the message again, I have to make a few clarifications... this is what you get for writing stuff after staying up all night putting a service into production:

Anyway, what's missing is not the valve, but the valve handle, as you might have guessed. The valve itself is between two tubes of clear plastic, so not actually attached to the seacock itself. I'm guessing it's a ball valve, since I was told you only needed to turn it a quarter to open/close.

I'd get some pictures, but the boat is a few hundred kilometers from where I am.

My marine English is at the very low level so I have to ask you Mikko what "seacock" is in Finnish? (As my marine Finnish is not so much better I may have to come back with this again :)

To spare the rest of the gang you might want to email to me only: etunimi.sukunimi at timohei.net

Quarter turn ball valves usually have a square end on the shaft that the handle fits over. The end of the square is normally engraved with a line that goes from corner to corner. When the line is in the direction of the pipes then the valve is open. When the line is at 90 degrees to the pipes then the valve is closed. Let me know if this is not clear and I shall make a sketch.

If the valve is completely closed, u will get

resistance from vacuum when trying to draw

water from outside.

Hi there!
Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. As the boat is a few
hundred kilometers from where I am, I'm unable to check it, but as soon I as I'll get there, I'll take a look.

I really need to find a new handle for it.
