VDO-SUMLOG

My 10 Foot VDO-SUMLOG cable broke. There used to be a marine store here
in Miami where I got replacements, but they went belly up. There is
another store
here, listed to carry VDO-products, but I have little luck getting
anything from them.

Does anyone know where I could get that cable-( preferably in the USA).
Though I
have a GPS, I also like to use the SUMLOG- it gives me a good idea about
currents.

Good morning Wilhelm, a brief search on Google revealed several sources for
the online inner cable.
For example http://www.lowtension.com/marine replacement parts.htm
But there where several more and you should be able to pick the most
economical / nearest to you etc. I buy this cable at a local (Dutch) marine
shop as it is still in the VDO order book. My inner cable usually last for
around 600-700 miles before breaking. Please take special care in crimping
the end on: it's a job that is best done at leisure, at home and you should
put the little crimping tool (supplied with the cable) in a vice clamp and
don't do it with pliers on the dock...
P.S. I always spray a little lubricant in the outer cable as well. Also
remember to secure the outer cable with a double stainless jubilee clamp in
the bilge. If this one comes loose, you Vega swamps itself slowly :(
Success,

Hi Wilhelm

Throw out the old sumlog and get a new digital log. More reliabel, cheap
and no
mechanical cables to break or seize up..... This will get a few tongues
wagging!!

Hello Hielke;

thanks a lot for your help. I've also received a list from
VDO-distributors, but had little luck.
All but one marine store listed there are out of business or no longer
available. And the one
I could contact didn't really know what I was talking about.

My cable always brakes after about 4 to 5000 miles (I have over 45.000
miles under my keel).
I've replaced this cable quite often, with the boat in the water or out
- my boat right now is out
for a bottom job, which would make the replacement somewhat easier.

I'll keep on trying to find the cable. Sumlog is very accurate and I use
it in combination with the
GPS in determining ocean currents. (It gives me the difference between
speed over ground and
speed through the water.)

Again, thank you so much... and happy sailing

Hi Stephen;

when are you coming to Miami? I'm almost done with my boat- made new
hatch covers,
the deck is painted, this week the bottom and the boat should be back in
the water end of
next week. That was just about the longest my boat was out of the water.

Hope to see you here- and I like to show you some nice spots around the
Florida Keys.

Hi all.:)

I know I asked that question before: does any one of you know where
I can get (in the USA) a 10 foot VDO-SUMLOG cable.
I'm in Miami, Florida. There are 2 marine supply stores (supposedly)
selling VDO parts. So far, I have not been able to get that cable from them.
I used to buy that cable at another marine store, but they went belly-up.
I kept the box from my last purchase- it says the following:

VDO Marine Instruments,
200 010
SUMLOG CABLE 10' - 3000MM
1 836 003 012D

Hi Wilhelm

Get a new LOG !!!!! Treat yourself and fit an electronic one, less to go
wrong,
cheap and the cable wont break every couple of years....

Still trying to arrange a trip to Florida. Flights during school holidays
are a
fortune!!

Hope all is well.

Kind Regards

Hi Stephen;

I have a GPS and it's very accurate! I like to get the speed from point to
point (with the GPS) AND the speed through the water (SUMLOG).
These two speeds are often quite different- for obvious reasons!

Looking forward meeting you,

Wilhelm, V-257
