Panbo has reported on a new use for AIS which is a Virtual Aid to Navigation. This technology can be used to easily mark temporary channels or moving sand like in the ICW. Much cheaper than moving physical AtoNs. In their example a rock is marked where buoys are regularly washed away from severe sea conditions.

Of course, you would need an AIS receiver and GPS but those are fairly cheap now.
