VAT Status within the EU

Dear All,

This issue is not specific to Vegas. As the UK authorities are no longer issuing "deemed VAT paid" certificates any longer, does anyone know what I should take with me to Ireland and France to prove VAT status? I have a letter from a former owner who can confirm that Vagrant was in EU waters on 31 December 1992. Is anyone out there in the same position or have recent experience? I have heard that the Irish authorities are fairly relaxed about this. I doubt that the French authorities are!

Kind regards,

John Booth

Hi John

If you contact VAGB with proof of Vagrant's whereabouts for that
specific period then the club will issue you a letter that seems to have
worked so far!

Cheers

Hi John.

Where is Vagrant now? Saw you in Victoria Dock over the winter but you'd
gone last weekend. We're heading to Ireland this summer, if your doing
the same get in touch.

Ray (Tortuga)

P.S. How's the stern gland?

Hi Ray,

She's back on her mooring in Rowen Bay, but she'll be back in Victoria Dock next month for the stern gland and some other jobs to be done. I won't make Ireland this year, but I'm planning on Aberystwyth at Whit.

Incidentally, there was another Vega in the dock with her mast down called Fragancia, I think. If the owner reads this it would be great to make contact! That makes four Vegas on the Straits! I wonder what the collective noun is for a group of Vegas....

Best wishes and many thanks for all your help last year.

Hi John.

The owner of Fragancia is Nick Leftley, I dont know if he is on this
group. I believe he has a problem with his stern gland too (a Volvo
Black Jack). He has a mast step problem as well, but not the usual
transverse beam one. The raised deck moulding under the step seems to
have collapsed. Not seen this before on any Vegas, how about you Steve?Who has the fourth Vega on the Menai Strait? Seen one in Dickies boat
yard but its not been touched for years. I think its called Gigi.

As for a load of Vegas, how about A Constellation of Vegas. (Vega
being the brightest star in the Lyra Constellation).

Regards,

Ray (Tortuga)

PS Will be in Victoria Dock on the 4th May all being well so may see you
there.

I suppose the correct term would be a "flotilla" of Vegas. Since Vega
is also a star I suppose "constellation" or "cluster" wouldn't be out
of order.

Hi Roy. In regards to the maststep problem. There is a wooden plank embedded
in the cabin top under that raised portion. It can rot! Drill through the
top of the cabin in numerous places over the plank to find dry wood. Let the
drilled areas dry out and then saturate it with Git-rot.

Hi Ray

Sterngland should be ok, should last for ages. Mine has been in for 8
years now!

Not seen the problem ref. the mast step. Can you get some photos?

A constellation of Vegas sounds perfect..

A "Constellation" might apply more to a small cluster of Vegas
but a "Gallaxy" would be more appropriate for very large
massings.

You know how geese have two collective names depending on whether they're on
the ground (gaggle) or flying (skein)?

Maybe we should use two different names:

- Constellation, for most uses (sailing, sitting in a marina, ashore, etc).

- Asteroid Belt, for when they're reversing under power in a marina...

Considering the amount of money we all seem to pour into our Vegas, or any
boat for that matter I might suggest the term Black Hole as appropriate.
