Varnishing stern rail seats

I bought my 33 new last year. Some of the varnish on the wooden slats on the stern rail seats are now separating from the wood. I was told by the dealer that I should expect to strip the wood down every year and revarnish because this is due to normal UV attack from the sun. Is everybody out there revarnishing their wood pieces every year? While the wood slats look nice, they are actually not that comfortable to sit on. I will likely put cushions on them or remove the wood if this annual revarnishing is required. Thanks in advance for your comments.

stern seat slats

Oliver, we all have that problem! it's made worse by the fact that hunter doesn't seal the bottom of the slats, so moisture gets into the wood under the varnish-and the tops are exposed to the sun. We got the stern rail cushions here at the chandlery and they are great to sit on-and have held up fine on our 356 for 3 years (so far!). I got a section of starboard, cut it to fit in place of the slats, and put the slats in storage-the cushions are always on, anyway, and there's no maintenance. Chuck Wayne H356 WWW.Escape

Just oil them

I just oil mine twice a year. Once in 7 years, hit them with a sander

Varnished 100%

Our slats are holdingup fine for the second season. They were removed, varnished, and reinstalled for us by the dealer during the commissioning. Not hte kind of thing that I think you should have to include as regular maintenance.

Don't Like varnish

I used mcclosky spar varnish the stern rail seats and top of companionway teak and so far not happy with it,I had to re sand it all off the companionway teak only after one year and I have a dodger on all the time and this time went with minwax polyurethane. I do take the stern rail seats off during winter layup and they are covered with cushions which are great and they look ok so far but will use polyurethane next time. I also use polyurethane on cabin sole and I just lightly sand and reapply a coating every other year. nick

Thanks

Thanks for the responses. I have to conclude that something needs to be done or else we should expect to revarnish every year or two. Can anyone tell me where they get their cushions and roughly how much they cost? Thanks. Oliver.

Yup

I have all of my slats off my stern rail seats right now, sanding and re-varnishing them. Also the companion-way cover handle. This was a new 33 last year just like you. I am also trying to remove the rust stains as every single screw is rusting... Andy

Is that all?

Oliver, There's not much to varnish on a Hunter. My former boat was a mid-60s construction, 1950's design with a fiberglass hull and WOODEN pilot house. Like I said, my "former" boat. With Cetol, if properly applied, it's simi-annual job; should take you an hour or two. With teak oil, you rub a little on occasionally, with a beer in the other hand. Have you checked your impellers? Andy, be sure to varnish the underside of the slats, too-otherwisee the varnish will just bubble off the tops
