Varnishing Interior Teak

I've got a Hunter 33, 1980 model, that has about 1 acre of teak belowdecks. It has been finished (refinished?) sometime in the past with some sort of oil or oil stain - doesn't look bad, but I think I would like it to have a more finished appearance. What do you think my chances of getting varnish to stick would be if I wiped down with acetone and then varnished over - I don't need to sand to get the surface clean or level. Any recommendations on varnish or finish - I use Cetol outside, but don't want the orange tint on the inside.

Spar Urethane

Jim, a couple of winters ago I decided to completely redue the interior of my 82 h33. My wife & I felt the interior was to dark with all that dark teak sooo I removed every piece of trim, including the overhead grab rails and the shroud chain plate facings. (found two of to have water damage, and had to buy new teak ply, cut to fit and replaced.) We then primed and painted all of the flat teak surfaces a semi gloss off white. All the trim and doors were refinished using Minwax Helmsman clear semi-gloss spar urethane. What a difference, every one who saw the interior before can't believe how much lighter the interior is. It also feels larger. A big job but these older boats tend to be dark & dingey down below. Now she's bright, cheery and looks great.

I Varnished It Too

..on a V32 using spar varnish, a combination of rubbed effect and gloss on moldings and fiddles. I agree with the last writer that it looked great, and reduced the maintenance greatly. FYI, I did as you suggested, but roughed up the surface with bronze (and plastic) wool. RD

Armada

If you like the Cetol finish try Armada. It's a similar product without the orange color. Personaly, I love the teak / mahogany below on our '83 33. We've had several people comment on how attractive the wood is. I use tung oil on it when I think of it. It cures to a sealed surface, not oily.
