does anyone have any suggestions for getting dried varnish off of a fiberglass deck or hull.

Goof Off

Dan, there's a product called Goof Off sold in hardware stores that's made to remove latex paint from home surfaces. I found it works well on boat varnish spots. Its main ingredient is Toluene and I would wipe it off thoroughly when the surface is clean in case it has the ability to soften gelcoat.

There is also a product called "Oops" that removes latex paint.

Goof off not goofup of Goo Gone...

Ken, Goof Off and Goo Gone are actually 2 different products. I doubt Goo Gone is strong enough to get up varnish, but it's mild enough to do no harm if it doesn't. Goof off and Oops would probably be about the same thing by different companies if they both contain Toluene.

Carefully srcape off what you can then try Acetone with good old elbow grease.

Goof Off - water based

Besides the regular Goof Off, there's a water-based version of Goof Off. It is seems to be easier on plastic. Just used this product this past week to remove some adhesive on the plastic windows on my boat (someone had put stickers on the window many years ago). The water-based Goof Off worked great and did not harm the plastic.
