My 23.5 wooden parts have been varnished before. Should I stick with spar varnish or do I strip it and use teak oil

How much work do you want to do? If you are going to use oil, you will need to sand down to bare wood. To varnish, you only need to sand it until it is smooth again, wipe clean and varnish.

I have three exterior teak rails that were coated with 2 coats Cetol natural followed by 2 coats Cetol gloss. It held up for six years in Gulf Coast sun, humidity, and heat. That's minimal maintenance in my opinion. It would have lasted longer if I would have sanded lightly and top-coated with gloss again about a year ago. Removed the rails and stripped last week; putting the final gloss coats now. Will reinstall this weekend.
The cockpit seating surfaces are teak veneer. I usually clean and apply 2-3 coats of Semco on the surfaces, annually, to prevent the teak from deteriorating; however, I don't want the slippery surface that would result with Cetol. Semco seals the surface and prevents water penetration. Much easier to apply as compared to Cetol; however, the down-side is that it isn't long lasting. It takes approximately one hour to apply one coat of Semco. No need to tape, just wipe away any brush marks on gelcoat with a clean paper towel or rag.

As a dealer, I used a lot of materials and found a light sanding each or every other year, applying various coats but chose Cetol. Yes it is work any which to go but ownership of a boat also includes maintenance just like the car and home.

However, no one has mentioned what the old timers use to do on the teak decks of the old battleships and early aircraft carriers. First time out cleaned them and applied Tung Oil with later coatings. It worked for years. I know Formby made a product with tung oil in it. I am asking you all what about going back and using tung oil?

I refinished the wood tiller and boarding step on my 23.5 about 3 years ago. I used Epifanes varnish. Pricy, but it looks fantastic and has not deteriorated at all. Virtually no maintenance.

Im curious about the tung oil and ship deck history. Ive never heard of that, but I have used tung oil in wood working. It may leave oily residue, which maybe they didnt care about on a war machine. Must have looked good tho.
