Variable pitch prop versus fixed pitch

I would like to replace 2-blade fixed pitch propeller with the one similar to Maxprop or other brand. The major reason is to minimize a lateral propeller effect which is quiet significant when the boat is driven astern. Is this a solution?? Would someone help to select the right brand, type (2- or 3-blade) and size in order to purchase the prop from lets say the e-bay basket? This is for Hunter 81, 36' driven by Yanmar 2Q20, prop shaft diameter is 1". Thanks, Michael.

Bay Props in Alameda can help

Michael: Bay Props in Alameda, CA can help minimize this problem for about 10% of the alternative. http://www.bay-ship.com/bayprp_nonsliptip.html

Backup helper

I work in a marina and bring and deliver many sailboats for haulout or repair. Many times boat has to be backed into the well or spar crane area. The ones who have Max-Prop type props that allow equal thrust in forward and reverse can back up almost as well as go forward. With a fixed prop it is a crap shoot with a sometimes severe port walk. My own boat, a H380, has the two blade Max and I can steer it anywhere in reverse.

What has been the overall effect of the prop.

David Foster: What have been the overall effects of your prop from Bay Props. Did you notice improved speed, better manuverability in reverse, improved fuel economy etc. etc? What prop did you have and what boat do you have?

Bay Prop Report

Bay Prop reworked the original two bladed prop on our 1977 h27. This included putting tips on the blades. The results were: A half knot more cruising speed in windless conditions at the same RPM. Reduced vibration. Reduced propwalk in reverse (and forward.) The efficiency improvement was the big reason we went for this solution. I'd still say that the best counter to prop walk is using high speed pulses to get some steerage way on, leaving it in neutral between pulses. The second big idea is to think ahead, and get the prop walk to work for us when maneuvering. David Lady Lillie

To Cpn Bob re Web Page

Bob - I used to use the pix right out of the camera (Mavica made them the right size for the web - 320x240 and web ready) but now with a new camera (Canon Digital Elf) if I want them smaller I use Adobe Photoshop Elements ($99). It has a batch process that will process and resize all the pix in a folder to whatever size and output (72 dpi for web) you want in one easy step. If you can reduce the pix they load quicker on the client's computer but don't lose much if any detectable quality. The thumbnails are a one click process from the large original but that is part of the MicroSoft FrontPage web page composer. There are other photo editing programs but I have not used them. This one has pretty much all you would need for editing photos. I use it to resize and download pictures for HunterOwners.com when necessary.
