I am sailing north to desolation sound this summer. I usually go through the islands and clear through bedwell harbour. this year I would like to go through Vancouver and i am having difficulty locating customs at or near a public marina. My wife and I are canpass members, our two guests will not be. I would like to be able to clear at or near a marina where I can spend the night with power and provision in town for about an 11 day trip before we leave. any recommendations or suggestions appreciated. I have tried the BC web site, no links and the customer service was no help. I have also emailed customs directly from their web site, no answer for 3 weeks.

Try Victoria

As far as I know you get only 3 choices and Vancouver is not one of them. They are : 1. Steveston. A fishing town and only has a few public berths. the bigger problem is fighting the river current. You have to travel up the south arm of the Fraser river. 2. Bedwell. Not the type of place to go for provisioning a long trip. 3. Victoria. My favourte City. You can clear customs there. There is also a public, government run dock, right in front of the Empress hotel. Read up on the rules of the road for when you enter the inner harbour as they are a little different and you don't want to mess with a float plane landing. You will be able to get anything you need plus there is a Chandlery called Trotac Marine. Well worth the visit. Canada Border Services is the new name for Canada Customs Dept. Enjoy Canada

vancopuver customs check in

there is a customs dock in the inner harbor near the entrance to coal harbor. There is a phone at the head of the ramp to call customs.

Mobile Customs Boat

I live in Delta and cross customs regularly, Steveston is my last choice, too many un-necessaries. Steveston does have marine supply stores, shops, provisioning, everything you need. We have CanPass hence many options, I tried Vancouver harbour once but nobody was there, it was closed by the time I arrived so I just went ahead anyway, you have to arrive at Fisherman's dock during hours and it is just under the Burrard bridge a bit on the south side close to Granville Island and foot shopping, nice place. Another option is White Rock Pier, (east side) while there is no one there, you can use your cell phone to call border services (it s a designated port of entry) and they can send someone over if they can spare the staff from Peace Arch Border (it is only a couple minutes drive away). White Rock is a nice place to stop and visit, many shops, but a long walk down the pier and nobody to guard your boat so lock it up. I also cleared at Ganges harbour via Mobile Customs boat, Canada Customs has a boat that comes to you, they cleared me out in little marine park once and another time at Ganges. Ganges harbour has many shops and a big Thrifty's food market for provisioning, power, showers, everything, all within walking distance of the dinghy dock. I believe you can clear non-CanPass passengers if you are at a designated mobile customs stop,(need cell phone) but check with border services. You can always clear at Bedwell then go to Ganges. Vancouver Harbour would be my choice if I planned to stay a couple days, just be sure to arrive during hours and know ahead of time where that dock is, I had to search for it and I live here. South side of the inlet and a few hundred yards past the first bridge and gas station. Stop at the gas station for directions, it is close by. Oh yea, you only clear customs there, you still need to find a marina with visitors docking, best to get reservations ahead.

Port of Sidney BC

Sidney has everything you need and is only a couple hours west of Bedwell. Big Thrifties and Safeways there and it is a funky place. You could then sail up through the Gulf Islands and exit Porlier Pass on slack and head straight across to Vancouver all legal.

On Second Thought

Now that I see you are comming from Oregon and through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, it would appear that Victoria or Sydney are your best ports of entry. Unless you plan a two day stop over in Vancouver to make it worth while it is several hours out of your way and not worth it if all you are doing is stopping to provision en route to Desolation Sound. It depends on what your plans are, but it is a fair distance in and out of Vancouver harbour, the better part of a day. On the other hand if visiting Vancouver is on your itinerary anyway then it will be time well spent, there is lots to see and do, and places to shop and provision as well as marine supply stores (all within walking). A very nice stop over en route, just be sure to put the time aside.

But he said he WANTS to go to Vancouver

But if you're coming thru that way, neither Victoria nor Sidney are really out fo your way going to Vancouver and then you're cleared before you get to Vancouver which is not a boater friendly place to clear. Shopping is very easy in Victoria from the boat, as is Sidney, not so much in Vancouver. Have a great trip.

clarification

thanks for all of the ideas. I should have clarified. I am actually leaving tomorrow to take Liberty up from Oregon to Lopez island where I moore for a couple months of the year. I was thinking of Vancouver as it appeared pretty direct and I was thinking that if I clear and provision there, I could make my next stop Pender harbor the next day and then reach desolation sound the following day.

Hi Monty, if I understand your plans a go fast...

boat can get you from either of the Penders to Desolation Sound in a long day. A sail boat much longer unless you plan to cruise around the clock. It normally takes us a long day from Bedwell to reach Ganges, Pirates Cove or Nanaimo under sail with favorable currents and wind. Then another long day to False Bay on Lasqueti Island and another to Lund. If I were doing it in our boat from Lopez I would clear at Bedwell then head up Swansons Channel to Ganges for provisions. A better sail plan IMHO than Vancouver or Sidney for that matter. Terry
