Hi guys, looking for some input into a good sailing area, planning on sailing in June arround Pennsicola, Mobile, or Pannama City. Looks from the map all offer sheltered sailing areas, any input, also anchorages, and marinas offering deep ramps/lift launch facilities. Will be sailing a C & C 25'. thanks..Buck

Whole area is good

We trailered to St Andrews State Park a couple of times.St Andrews bay is a good sailing area and you can take the ditch to Choctawhatchee bay which is also good sailing. You can sail in protected water from Destin to Pensacola and over to Mobile bay. If you go east you can go to St Joe. St Andrews has a launch ramp and pretty secure parking. We left out truck there for a week with no problems. I like the ability to go from Mobile to Appalachacola in protected water. We go outside when weather permits.

Tom's right....

There is some great sailing and numerous anchorages between Ingram's Bayou (Alabama) and past Panama City. Since most of my time is spent in south Alabama and northwest Florida waters, I'm prejudice towards that area. Perhaps one of the best achorages is Big Lagoon, just west of Pensacola Bay and on the ICW. Also, you should check out Pirate's Cove and Robert's Bay to the west. Check out Google Earth of this area to get a bird's eye view. Also, for your viewing pleasure, check out my video of our past May '06 trip to that area. It may give you a feel for the place. Good luck.... Dick s/v CD EXPRESS

Mobile Bay

Can get pretty rough. The bay really isn't protected and it seems the waves get rough when the wind picks up to near 20 knots. The Mississipi Sound is partially protected from the southern winds.

pogo sticking mobile bay

The other small thing about mobile bay besides that it can get a little rough, is that besides the shipping channel, its approximately 10 foot deep(max) lots of shallow areas marked with colorful crab pots. I specially liked the blue and green ones. Trying to cross from eastern shore marina to mobile before a thunderstorm hit, i missed the cut through the spill areas. If you could see the bottow you Probably can still see the pogo stick holes my keel made. Luckily the bottom is a soft mud.

I'd Look to go Between Perdido and Fort Walton

Or Panama City and Carrabelle. How many of there are you and do you want to anchor out or stay in marinas? Kids?

Sailing this area

Good info. given here. This is a nice sailing area. Lots of good anchorages, but some pretty shallow water too. Be sure to have up to date charts and watch the depth finder. You can anchor up inside all of the barrier islands, and have good protection from the prevailing southerly winds. If you get that far west, be sure to check out Homeport Marina and Lulu's. ( Jimmy Buffets sister ) Her place is at mile 150, right next to the bridge. In addition to the mentioned anchorages you might also try Wolf Bay. While it is still not back to normal, Pt.Cadet marina is open, in Biloxi. Right behind the casinos. Also marina at Beau Rivage casino. Post up more before you leave. Lots of boats from this area will be out and about. Good chance to meet and greet some nice people.

Pensacola to Mobile

I've only been Westward out of Pensacola....in summary, go...its a great area! Best anchorage is Big Lagoon, then go via the gulf or ICW over to Perdido Bay. Once inside Perdido Pass from the Gulf the water gets thin...from experience, pay close attention to the charts. Pirates Cove is a good anchorage in the Perdido area. I also highly recommend Bear Point Marina (just on the other side of the ICW from Pirates Cove). Nice place to dock up and good restaurant. You'll have a great time. Give us an update when you get back.
