We want to go to the San Juans for our anniversary, and are hoping someone out there can tell us which island has the best bed & breakfast with sailing available.

San Juans

I do lots of sailing in the San Juans and can assure you that you have made a good choice. I can't quote specifics on B&B's nor boat rentals, but can give you some places to start. San Juan Island is the largest and has the most B&B's. The hub of the islands here is the Town of Friday harbor. I know that across the island the resort of Snug Harbor used to rent boats (including sailboats) you can try them.Orcas island is a bit more laid back, but still several B&Bs to choose from. Charter from Bellingham

Skip the B&B. Charter a boat from San Juan Sailing in Bellingham. Also skip marinas. Spend nights at anchor. This is the best way to experience the San Juans.Tides are the biggest factor causing fast currents and large standing waves at max ebb or flood burying the bow in green water. The boat can be traveling 30 to 40 degrees off the bow. With many sharp reefs, mind the chart closely and become very familiar with the tide tables.In summer, sunset is near 10pm and sunup near 4am giving long days. San Juan sailing

Hi Bobbi - my home port is Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. Before I bought my boat, I chartered twice from Northwest Charters here in Friday Harbor. They're on the web. The advantage being that you're already in the San Juans and close to the Gulf Islands, and you don't have to use your charter time making the passage from Bellingham or Anacortes. In Bellingham I've used :

www.orcasailing.com and have stayed at McCann House ( http://www.decannhouse.com/ ) before & after and been very happy with both. Not on the islands but you can fly in to Bellingham direct and be sailing in the islands next day.
