For the last 2 years, my family and I have chartered a boat out of Annapolis as part of our summer vacation. Annapolis is great because so many interesting places are within a day's sail. I was thinking that next year we might go to the southern part of the Chesapeake. Since the kids are small, day long passages are to be avoided unless there is a really great destination. With this as an objective, is it possible to sail into the Williamsburg area and go to Bush Gardens? Are there other kid friendly destinations in that area? Mark

Sara Creek ....

Is just across the York River from Yorktown and is in close driving distance to Busch Gardens, Jamestown and Williamsburg .... you can rent a car from close to the marina and they will deliver. Sara Creek is a complete marina. Not many other 'interesting' places nor marinas close-by. Would be a 'stretch' passage from Annapolis with small kids. Been to St. Mikes or Solomons Island? Lots of kid-stuff in Baltimore's Inner Harbor: Maryland Science museum, the National Aquarium, etc. etc. ;-)

How Many Days Y'all Got?

If you have the time, charter out of Norfolk. So here is my week: Day 1: to Concrete Ships, on Eastern Shore. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience: look it up! This will give you some great sailing across the bay: My now 28 y.o. daughter and I did it years ago: she still talks about it when she and her family drive across Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Day 2and 3: back to Elizabeth River, ICW mp zero. Anchor out at Hospital Point or tie up at Waterside. With kids, you cannot miss Children's Museum and Sports Museum in Portsmouth, and see Nauticus in Norfolk. IMHO, Busch Gardens, WaterCountry etc. is a driving trip, not a boat trip. Long Day 4-5: Sailing to Jamestown to walk around and try going up to Chickahominy River to explore with kids would be great. Day 5-6 Back to Hampton Harbor and Air/Space Museum. Viewing military stations Fort Monroe is also neat: see the only fort we US Army still has, with a moat! Day 7 Back to Norfolk.
