V-berth issues

Previous poster has a point; we too are going to modify our cabin so table lowers to give us a queen size berth. The Hunter 34 V berth has a step mounted on the fwd bulkhead wall which helps get in and out of V berth so step stool is not necessary. My wife and I are in our 60s and getting in and out along with limited headroom is tough, foot space is tight regardless. CPAP hose is a pain. To get in and out after she is in I have to roll into a pretzel with all kinds of contortions.
On the plus side: after a few days of cruising I am incredibly less stiff and more limber than when I boarded.

How big is the v berth? My wife (5-6) and I (5-9) sleep very comfortably on our vberth and there is room for 3rd person in between. Now then it would be tight lol.

The front part is the size of a king mattress and the length of a king but of course forms a v.
Here’s a picture of my wife and I. (I play the bagpipes)
Ought to be some good spots to face the sunset and play the pipes at OCBC. ;-)

One of the best mods to our Mac 25 has been the removal of the forward head wall and installing a hinged extension to the v-berth. it can go up during the day to access the head, but we just use a pee bucket when needed at night. makes into very near to queen size bed now, and no need to rearrange tables etc. when we're ready to dive in for the night, our bed is always ready.

We did OK for many years in the forepeak of our Catalina 30. We used a step in the center, sat on our bottoms and swung around to be feet toward bow. Then we snuggled forward. The stool on the "floor" (cabin sole?) made the difference. As the years passed, it got harder. We tried berths with Pullman (one side open), but that never worked for us. Since we like to sleep together, we ultimately got a boat with a large rear cabin, queen berth. If I wanted a smaller boat, I'd look to one with the queen forward berth. Both sides have a step that allows you to get in on your side fairly easily.

She’s yar! Maybe stop the piping 1 hour before bunk time and let her nerves settle. :)
Ha! I’ll have to keep that in mind.
Thanks all for your replies. Much appreciated

I’m like you. I like to sleep together infact have problems sleeping if it’s only me. I had go to Nepal for two weeks for work and had to take sleeping pills ever night.

..Has any one used a step stool to get in and out?
We started with one of the small step stools but...

... then I made a platform that works much better and we have room under to store all of our footwear. It still leaves an area to walk to the V-berth.

I enter feet first on both boats and Dottie enters headfirst and turns around. The platform makes it way easier for both of us. More on it here...

The H-34 has an interesting Vee.. It is about 3 feet off the deck, but there is a little step built onto the bulkhead.. We go in head first and turn around.. comfortable, once settled in..

My wife had the same feelings on my C30 V birth. I liked the coziness and she felt claustrophobic. Not much you can do, we ended up dropping the table and sleeping in the salon. I agree getting in wasn't easy and turning around to exit was even worse. Maybe yoga might help. I got a bigger boat to keep her happy.

My wife finds ours a little tight as well.
I like it myself.

But you know the saying...happy wife happy life.

We did this for when it’s just the two of us...8E14180B-1E68-4821-8CF4-D6298B2C966B.jpeg(sorry for the rotation on the photo)

I actually used it for the first time last weekend (the cushion was finally complete). I had a ton of room and my buddy that was blocked in the v birth didn’t complain too much

I installed a small step on my Catalina 30 that made it easier to get in and out. We loved snuggling up but yes we did find it a bit small even though neither of us were large people. We added a foam topper and some panels along the sides for comfort. Finally the wife had enough and demanded we buy a bigger boat. Problem solved.

Hey that’s neat. The only thing about sleeping in the main cabin is I like that empty. The kids each have a quarter berth to themselves leaving our main cabin empty so if I want to get up early and make a cup of tea I’m not waking anyone up. The funny thing is you can sit up in our v berth where you put your head. It’s about 2/3 down your chest before it closes in. But Linda always goes head first and gets in the closed area and then she’s a mess for the rest of the night. But yes, happy wife happy life is one of the truest statements I’ve ever heard.
Thanks
Mike

I was thinking this could be done just over the sink on the starboard side.

I was told, by a Welshman, that the Irish gave the bagpipes to the Scotts as a joke,

but the Scotts never caught on.
