Don while doing some searches here looking for traveller info I came across a post by you saying you used to own a mac 22 and felt that the traveller was useless on that boat. I want to get away from the triangle setup. What do you feel would be a good system on that boat?

Mac Daddy: I have to go WAY, WAY back in time on this one. Let me tell you how I ended up with a Mac 22 in the first place. I grew up in RI on Narragansett Bay ( I lived very close to Edgewood YC). Anyway, sailing was all we knew as kids growing up but as I got older I moved into power boats and finally ended up with a high speed jet boat that could do about 65MPH - in reverse!! We owned a second home at Lake Havasu, AZ on the Colorado River. Anyway, one day, after my son's brought the jet boat home in pieces (again) my wife suggested why don't we get back into sailing. Sounded like a good idea to me. Just so happened I noticed at the marina this nice Mac 22 for sale, which I bought. I sold my pristine jet boat to my sons, which was a mistake I would never make again. What a mess they made out of it. It made me sick to se it - I should have sold it to a stranger so I would never have to see it again.

We had more fun with that Mac 22 than any boat I've owned. My neighbor thought I was a nut case. Some days when the wind was from the right direction I would raise the main and jib in my driveway and trim up the sails. One day it was so gusty I almost sailed it off the trailer!!

Now, getting back to your question. Actually, I don't remember saying the traveler was useless but maybe I did. The reason is, and I'm going back in my memory, I don't think the Mac 22 has a traveler.

Here's the bottom line and my personal opinion. Until you get to say the 30' level a traveler is kind of useless (as I mentioned about the Catalina 25), and it is due to the limited mainsail area. Actually, I though that Mac 22 parked in my driveway at Lake Havasu was one of the biggest boats I had been on at that time.

I really don't know how you would rig a traveler on a Mac 22. The only place would be at the end of the boom and you'd have to reconfigure the mainsheet.

Mac Daddy, thanks for the memories.

Your right the Mac doesn't have a traveller. Some guys are mounting one right at the cabin entrance across the seats but the little lady is not to keen on it. Ahh the old jetboat and wakeboarding days some good times there.

Mac Daddy: I agree with your wife. The only place I would consider would be the aft combing where the connections for the mainsheet are located. I'm not sure how much installation work that would be. I might change my mind if I had a boat to look at. in other words, it may turn out that I would think there is not enough benefit to having a traveler due to the size of the sail area.
