Kida looks like one. Some sails have a sacrificial piece of sailcloth sewn on like that so that it can be easily and cheaply replaced every few years; makes light air sail set nicer. Some have white UV covering. That is usually heavier than sailcloth would be.
It looks like a UV cover. Ours was blue so you could tell when it was wrapped all the way around the furled sail. I can't see another reason for the extra material in that area. If it's sacrificial all the better. If it were a racing sail you would either hoist a sail cover over the furled sail or take the sail down after each use.
Thanks for the replies. It’s a used sail I saw on eBay and the guy selling it doesn’t know lol. Perfect dimensions for my boat and my job I currently have is stretched out. Great price on it and looks in good shape but think I’m just gonna hold off on it.
