using the dousing sock

I bought a used passage 42 that came with an asym spinnaker and a dousing sock. I have pretty much figured out how to set up the halyard, sheets and downhaul based on all the parts that came with the sail. My problem is associated with the dousing sock. As it is presently rigged there are 2 short lines attached to the hoop. They are attached at the same two connection points on the hoop. At the midpoint of these lines a thin line running in its own dedicated pocket is attached to each of the lines.It would appear as though I should untie one of the two thin lines from the short lines and use it to haul the sock up. It would also appear that I am missing a long thin line to pull the sock back down from the top of the mast. I have went on different web pages but cannot seem to find any diagram related to the sock. Thanks

Sock/Unsock Line

I agree that your rig appears to be missing the continuous Sock/Unsock Line. The two unsocking lines run up the sides of the sock inside special retaining tabs. They are connected via a bridle at the top to the socking line. I have posted several shots of my Hood MPS flying at the dock at the related link. If you would like, I can set the sail in its sock and try to take another photo showing what the lines should look like and how they are used to unsock and sock the sail. Just go the related site and "E-Mail Sam". I'll be glad to add any additional photos to the SamsTips Page that would clarify things for you. Sam

Got the ATN website - they have a video showing...

... a dousing sock being used that may give some insight. http://www.atninc.com

More Photos

Frank: I have added four photos to the related link. The first of the four photos has "Frank" above it. They are all thumbnails that enlarge when clicked. The is a description of each photo that shows on thumbnail mouseover. Also, the right three photos above the four below "Frank" refer to the MPS. The second from the right shows the socking line at the top. You can see the socking lines to the little block through which the two unsocking lines are rove. There are so many different types of cruising spinnakers and socks all with different nomenclature. What is needed is an animation of your design. The animation on the ATN site may help understanding some. On the Hood design the continuous line actually consists of an exterior part that goes up the sock via the canvas straps and an interior part that comes down the nylon sleeves. I still have the sock up. If there is further detail needed don't hesitate to ask. Sam
